Texas House votes to ARREST runaway Democrats for blocking voting rights bill: State Dems sing outside the Capitol and insist they are willing to go to jail after fleeing on private jets

Republicans in the Texas State House voted 76-4 on Tuesday to arrest the runaway Democrats who fled to Washington D.C. to break the quorum and block the passage of Governor Greg Abbott's voting rights bills.

'Members, a sergeant-at-arms and any officer appointed by him are directed to send for all absentees whose attendance is not excused for the purpose of securing and maintaining their attendance under warrant of arrest if necessary,' Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan announced from the State House floor.

Texas House rules allow the sergeant-at-arms to arrest members who are not present at the Capitol for a vote – and the show of disapproval Tuesday could result in the lawmakers' arrest when they land back in the Lone Star State.

The Tuesday, however, vote doesn't hold much weight as long as the Democrats remain in Washington since by crossing state lines they have escaped jurisdiction of Texas law enforcement.

The group maintains that they aren't afraid of Governor Abbott's threats to arrest them for fleeing the state to break a quorum and avoid voting on Republicans ' election legislation.

Fine, but it cannot practically be carried out outside Texas.

I suggest Abbot end the special session, for now and reconvene it again (and again, and again as necessary) when enough Dim reps have returned. Eventually the Dims will just have to admit they do not have the votes to block the legislation.

Meanwhile, Abbot and the Texas GOP need to remind everyone in the country that the Dims action demonstrates that they do not really believe in “democracy” when democracy does not agree with them.

The state reps who are democrats have done this for years-every time they don’t like a bill and are outnumbered-gov Abbott has already done what is appropriate and within legal limits-unfortunately it is not legal to drag them back here and put them in the stocks in the public square-there are limits...

"Abbott will do NOTHING."

If you are correct, then this is all for show and he is a collaborator, too.

I suspect the quorum requirement is a part of the Texas constitution. The Dems are abusing the quorum rule but actually quorums are a very good idea.

I used to like Abbott, but he’s pretty much your typical Milquetoast Republican.

Correct on both counts.

I have only heard of two states that have had an issue it the opposing party leaving the state to trigger this. Wisconsin and Texas.

So I am assuming the other 48 don’t have such a requirement, and this if it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for us.

Jail them all in solitary and hold new elections for their positions.
They are delinquent in their duties. Grounds for tossing them out!

“fleeing on private jets”

makes for interesting speculation...how exactly is it that a Texas state legislator can “afford” a private jet?

Assuming a campaign donor or constitutent-is providing said “private jet” -why would such a patron NOT want voter integrity?

inquiring minds want to know

It's really too bad that the Texas House doesn't have a rule that if a legislator is AWOL more than days in a row, the legislator is deemed to have resigned.

Didn’t GOP try it in Washington or Oregon? TX and WI rats were first though.

Charge and convict them with felonious acts of fraud for impersonating a state official (legislator) and taking money for it.

The felony conviction then prevents them from holding office and running for anything higher than a dog catcher. Oh wait, they can’t do that either.
