Biden seeks to lift limits on farmer deals with meat processors, tractor makers

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -President Joe Biden wants to give U.S. farmers more power in negotiating the sale of livestock to big processors and in deciding who repairs their tractors, the White House said on Tuesday.

The executive order, expected within days, will also address such competitive issues as delayed airline baggage, cellphone company practices and Pentagon contracts, a source briefed on the matter told Reuters.

The order would encourage the Federal Trade Commission to limit the ability of farm equipment manufacturers to prevent tractor owners from using independent repair shops or repairing their own equipment.

Reuters first reported the action on repairs earlier on Tuesday and the planned executive order last week.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said on Tuesday the effort would help farmers "fight back against abuses of power by giant agribusiness corporations and give farmers the right to repair their own equipment how they like."

The FTC wrote a report for Congress in May that discussed "Right to Repair," addressing the limits that manufacturers put on who can repair items ranging from mobile phones to home appliances to cars. Such limits may also raise the price of those repairs.

At a high level I can't see anything wrong with this EO.

I never knew that tractor companies sold tractors with the caveat that only they can repair them. Sounds absurd. Warranty work, sure comes with the territory. A lease? Maybe one of the terms to preserve its secondary market value. But if you own it, why on earth can’t you fix it yourself?

GD John Deere and Fiat are the culprits on this one!

Especially Deere. They wont allow the computer diagnostic programs to be used by anyone but themselves.

Farmers? This sounds aimed at Apple who claim that third party repairs violate your warranty/trade-in value.

They deny access to software and void maintenance contracts/warranties.

On everything. Including factory parts.

You can’t even buy software anymore. You can only LICENSE it for a year at a time.

At a high level I can't see anything wrong with this EO.

If repairs were made outside the dealership, that would be OK, except it should also void the warranty. If BillyBob tractor repair messes up and causes damage, John Deere shouldn’t have to make the fix for free.

Can a fake president produce a real EO?

This walking cadaver has been doing, seeing, everything wrong for half a century. Nothing he does is worth a plug nickle.
Now that he presumably has the power of the presidency, he is more dangerous than ever.

At a place I worked, the plant engineer took out as many of the electronic components he could and replaced them with pneumatic, air pressure, stepper motors or simple bypass lines etc. Partly it’s because that’s what he knows he can fix, and partly because he hates dealing with programming the stuff and dealing with the repair people, downtime waiting for parts or service etc - bad for business. He can machine his own replacement parts. Don’t need a computer for most of this stuff tractors have been around for decades working just fine without them.

Fraud vitiates everything.

Vitiate: transitive verb

To make ineffective (a contract or legal stipulation, for example); invalidate.

Only if proven and adjudicated in a court with jurisdiction.

Absent both of those things, it never happened, according to the law and constitution.

Letting an outside mechanic or yourself do repair work will and SHOULD void any and all warranties.
