Taking on a marine fresh out of boot camp would not be a path I would want to take.

RUNNING TO THE SOUND OF BATTLE!”

From an ex-Army Paratrooper, well done. Unfortunately, both Army elite forces and Marines are being emasculated, feminized, and neutered by ball less Biden wonders in the Pentagon.

We’ll be hearing great things from this fine young Marine.

The man selflessly acted like a man should in that situation, but is this the image that the new Wokelitary forces seems to want to major on? Versus the WOKE capabilities of the new liberalnation army, from
allowing transgenders to serve in the military, and ensuring
free gender reassignment surgery for active military personnel, to the Navy's first
all gay U.S. Navy helicopter crew to
to lower fitness standards for women while
nearly half of female soldiers are still failing the new Army Fitness Test, while
Forcing Marines to Make Boot Camp Coed, and
feeding cadets cultural Marxist propaganda about gender and masculinity therein, to its new
diversity and inclusion operation from West Point to
Special Operations Command and the Army's woke recruitment ad featuring lesbians at a gay wedding and an LGBTQ pride march, along with the CIA's 'cisgender millennial with anxiety disorder' campaign, to its powerful readiness to engage in
online combat with the likes of Tucker Carson and other such enemies while
nuking Jesus-themed candies on an Air Force bases and
Pepe the Frog, while
allowing turbans and hijabs in the Air Force, changing its song to be gender-neutral, while working to
rid the military of “extremism” such as the
head of the US Space Force unit being fired and put under investigation for criticizing Critical Race Theory

This hero will probably now be on the DOD poop-list...
He will have to be reprogrammed along with the other potential future terrorists who commit un-woke acts of bravery...

That would be “SEMPER FIDELIS” to those of you who were not a member in good standing of Uncle Sam’s UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS; SEMPER FI to those of us who were
I know what a SEMPER FI is, but I have no idea what a “SAMPER FI” might be.
Sounds like a box of chocolates to me.

So; what medal was it, sounds like something that would warrant a Commendation or Meritorious Service to me, good conduct’s are given out just for staying out of trouble.

No, it would not; we had a tendency to be very short on patience and quick to anger and act.

The article said it’s the “service’s highest award for noncombat heroism.” Isn’t that more than a good conduct medal? I don’t actually know, but it sounds better.

It is very much better, the Commendation Medal would be awarded for heroism and/or meritorious service, the Meritorious Medal would be awarded for outstanding achievement or service to the United States.
Any Marine who does 2 years of service with no demerits (personal or professional downchecks) is eligible for the Good Conduct Medal, so yes either one of these is VERY MUCH BETTER.
They both designate OUTSTANDING performance on the part of that Marine.

"Any Marine who does 2 years of service with no demerits (personal or professional downchecks) is eligible for the Good Conduct Medal,"
Unless it's changed, in the intervening 45 years since I was in boot camp, it is 3 years for a Good Conduct medal. (something about Marines going 4 years without getting in trouble is a bridge too far)
"(personal or professional downchecks)" what the heck is a down check?
How about no busts, NJP, Courts Marshal.
