DENVER — Xcel Energy customers could see higher bills in 2022.

The company submitted a proposal to raise rates to the Colorado Public Utilities Commission.

They say the increase will help fund “next-generation technology investments that expand and strengthen the reliability of the electric grid for customers, advance Colorado’s clean energy policies, and increase capacity to meet growing customer needs and expectations.”

Xcel said that since 2019 and through 2022, it will spend for $4 billion on the investments.

How much will my bill increase? Residential customers would see their bills increase by an average of $9.46 a month, or 12.83% compared to current bills, according to Xcel.

Small commercial customers would see an increase of about $14.46 a month, or 12.89% of current rates.

The rate hikes would increase Xcel’s revenue by about $343 million, according to the company.

If approved, customer rate changes would go into effect in September 2022.

15 years ago Xcel said spending $190 million by ratepayers - not stockholders) to upgrade existing power plants was in the ratepayers best interest to keep the units running through 2035.

As a regulated monopoly, Xcel is guaranteed Huge profits... Xcel does not care about the rate payers.

Comanche Generating Station uses Low-sulfur coal / is the largest power plant in Colorado. It is located near Pueblo..

During the 2017 legislative session, Xcel.. failed in the Senate.. because it made zero economic sense to force Coloradans to pay to shut down our most affordable and dependable power plants, in favor of unreliable wind turbines and solar panels that can increase electricity costs while decreasing dependability.

After the session, Xcel changed its tune.. by going to Hickenlooper and the Public Utilities Commission for something it could not get passed through the Legislature... as its Minnesota executives and Wall Street shareholders laugh their way to the bank.

Coal will ALWAYS be dirtier than natural gas. All power plants now have to meet the same clean Air regs. If coal cannot meet the same clean Air regs as natural gas even with hundreds of millions in triple layers of scrubbers then they will be shut down. The days of burning coal at atmospheric pressure and letting the stack gasses go unfiltered into the environment are over forever.

Coal can be cleaned up to meet clean Air regs that gas plants can hit without triple layers of scrubbers.

These technologies can meet natural gas emission and therefore pass EPA regs. None of them are currently as cheap as gas plants likely never will be. So coal is on the way out it cannot meet the cleanliness of the alternatives and we the people have said clean Air is more important than burning coal via our representative Republic and the laws that our representatives have passed on our behalf. So unless coal can meet the current levels of emissions to be legal every one of them will be shut down when there permits expire. No renewals will be granted unless they meet the current laws for emission.

China is not the USA they pollute on a scale unseen anywhere else in the planet. Just because they do doesn’t justify the USA doing the same we have the EPA and our clean Air laws for a reason. Those laws are popular with 70+% of Americans supporting the clean Air and water acts no way either gets repealed. The facts are want to burn coal in the USA meet or exceed the limits set by our representative government and vast majority of the citizens who vote. Coal can meet most of the current regs it just takes triple layers of scrubbers that cost a lot more than just switching to natural gas which doesn’t have the toxins in the fuel in the first place. Atmospheric pressure combustion of coal without triple scrubbers is dead in the USA. Welcome to the twenty first century our lungs, lakes and kidneys thank us. China can have an environment nightmare on their backyard the USA has said no to that.
