Compensation of any kind is taxable. Pretty stupid to skirt the law over 1.7M spread over so many years.

Not any kind, but there are many kinds. Rule of thumb is it should be taxable,
but a CPA should be consulted.

For example, reimbursements for food is taxable if the meal happens off work-site for example. But is not taxable if on-site or if the meal was for business meetings.

IRS has a lot of rules.

No, there are huge grey areas.

Tax law is subject to wide variations in interpretation, otherwise there would be no need for tax strategies, tax lawyers or tax courts.
