Ransomware hacking group REvil brought the networks of at least 200 U.S. companies to their knees on Friday and is now demanding $70 million in bitcoin. Australia’s ABC News reported on Saturday REvil had targeted software supplier Kaseya and used its network-management package to spread the ransomware via the cloud. Over 1 million machines are said to be infected according to various other reports. The Russian-based ransomware group is now demanding the bitcoin in exchange for a decrypter for the infected machines. “On Friday we launched an attack on [managed service providers],” a post from the dark web site Happy Blog reads. “More than a million systems were infected.” In May, REvil attacked Colonial Pipeline and managed to get the company to pay a $5 million ransom after its functionality and services were restricted, sparking a gas crisis in the U.S. JBS Holdings, the world’s largest meat company by sales, also paid an $11 million ransom in a May 30 attack against it by the same group.

Because they knew he would have them hunted down and dealt with on the spot.

Biden will hand everything over and give them an apology.

The public at large needs to take a deep breath and calm down before getting spun up by propaganda.

This is a real story, companies are getting hacked and they are paying ransom to get the keys to start operating again.

But in every one of these articles, they attribute the hacks to one group and say it’s based in Russia.

Given all the lies we’ve heard over the last year about Covid and many other things....I have zero confidence we are being told the truth about these attacks. ..

Maybe Russia is behind all of this, but I have my doubts, since the start of Russiagate, why all of a sudden is Russia and not China the major enemy we should be mad at ??

If these attacks are happening from inside of Russia, the Russian Government could stop them if they wanted to, right now they choose not to because it benefits them...

How do we get the attacks to stop, if they are coming from Russia we make it clear every time we are attack we will attack back, assuming we have not told them already...

We hack major companies inside of Russia and shut them down, maybe make the lights go off in a few Russian Cities, whatever the case, we make it painful enough that Russia stops the attacks if they are starting from inside of Russia....

There are no longships sailing the coasts and coming up the rivers but where there were Vikings a millennia ago, there are now these crypto-Vikings demanding this era's Danegeld! Our shores are now in our internet and it seems there are so many vulnerabilities that it is like an undefended coastline!

What is obscene is that our leaders are so laser-focused on hobgoblins like white supremacism and CRT. The fact is that the best Biden could do in his recent meeting with Russia's current version of life-ruler, Putin, is a list of 16 areas where a cyber attack would greatly vex him!

"Dane-geld" (AD 980-1016)

IT IS always a temptation to an armed and agile nation
To call upon a neighbour and to say: –
"We invaded you last night – we are quite prepared to fight,
Unless you pay us cash to go away."

And that is called asking for Dane-geld,
And the people who ask it explain
That you've only to pay 'em the Dane-geld
And then you'll get rid of the Dane!

It is always a temptation for a rich and lazy nation,
To puff and look important and to say: –
"Though we know we should defeat you,
we have not the time to meet you.
We will therefore pay you cash to go away."

And that is called paying the Dane-geld;
But we've proved it again and again,
That if once you have paid him the Dane-geld
You never get rid of the Dane.

It is wrong to put temptation in the path of any nation,
For fear they should succumb and go astray;
So when you are requested to pay up or be molested,
You will find it better policy to say: --

"We never pay any-one Dane-geld,
No matter how trifling the cost;
For the end of that game is oppression and shame,
And the nation that plays it is lost!"

Rudyard Kipling - 1911

“If these attacks are happening from inside of Russia, the Russian Government could stop them if they wanted to, right now they choose not to because it benefits them...“

The same way we stop drug smuggling and chips trafficking here in America? It’s a bold statement that if crime comes from a country, that the government could simply stop it.
Then of course, we must remember that our government has lied to us incessantly for a decade at least. There is simply no basis to believe this accusation.
It could be coming from Palo Alto and they could be pointing at Russia to misdirect us.

They are liars.

I agree. For going on 6 years, all we have heard is, Russia is the boogie man. I think/believe that Russia, for the most part is damn near a third world country that cannot even build an air craft carrier. While I suspect these cyber ransom attacks may be coming from Russia, I doubt they are coming from the Russian State.
Hell, I would not put it past The Party (DNC) to be behind them.

Can someone knowledgeable in this area please explain why these companies don’t have backup copies of their OS which can replace the one hacked?

Is there any such thing as a hack proof system?

The thing about Russia like China they have ability to shutoff the internet going into and out of their country and closely monitor the traffic of what is allowed, if these attacks are happening inside Russia they know about it and could stop it if they wanted to

The thing about our country is yes we could stop drugs from coming in and we could close the border if we really wanted to but we have to many politicians and businesses that prosper from all the crimes either thru advancement of a political agenda or financially

My response is what harry said when confronted by robbers at the liquor store demanding a police car. Give it to them. He followed it up by raking the car through the window and taking them out. Remember also the quote millions for defense but not one cent for tribute. Follow those examples.

The most likely reason is the backup copies are infected as well, put the ransomware in place and let it sit there for a month or more infect all or most of the backup copies, then what does a company do ??

To your final point there is no such thing as a hack proof system, most people think hacking a coming from some remote location via the internet but in reality most hacks happen from people inside the company

“The most likely reason is the backup copies are infected as well,...”

I don’t understand this. If I have an OS like say Windows 10 and becomes corrupted I can fix it by reinstalling it from the back up CD which is totally separate.

How are back up copies of a company OS corrupted if they are in no way connected to the current system?
