Arizona official says California's electrical power grab could lead to outages

(The Center Square) - The head of the Arizona Corporate Commission worries that California power officials moving their wattage to the front of the line would export power outages to Arizona and elsewhere.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) recently decided to allow the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) to prioritize energy flow throughout California over Arizona. This concerns to the chairwoman of the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC), Lea Marquez Peterson.

CAISO petitioned FERC to make changes to its tariff related to transmission priority through California in response to the extensive blackouts in August 2020. The summer readiness plan approved by California's primary grid operator deprioritized the electrical wattage sent outside the golden state when the power demand is high.

In reaction, the ACC and public utility commissions and electric utilities in states such as Nevada, New Mexico, and Oregon filed protests with FERC, saying that CAISO is an "independent" entity and should be held accountable in an "open" and "fair" wholesale market.

I have not seen this discussed locally in the Phoenix area.

I totally agree.

Our APS rates are high enough as it is. Yes, I’m venting.

No it isn’t. What is stupid is massive dependence on intermittent electrical generation sources like wind and solar.

Obvious need for more solar and wind farms in AZ. NevaDA probably ain’t far behind. šŸ˜•šŸŒ‡šŸ’Ø

This is exactly right. Ca going all electric is going to rob other states of their power. Not to mention the electric car load. Ca idiocy needs to be stopped before it gets any worse. Who do they think they are to rob everyone else’s power with their irrational illogical actions?

I think they ought to live with their choices instead of taking away from everyone in nearby states.

I’m sure if the went to court on such matters, CA would win and the rest of us would be stuck with outages, etc. My gosh, I can’t imagine power outages in the desert southwest.

Iā€™m okay if Texas sells to Arizona and not to California.

AZ needs to make the point that CA has millions of illegals so the FERC is diverting power from citizens to non-citizens.

Same goes for CAP water: AZ should get an increased allotment since the water is being used in CA to supply foreigners.

Let them buy it from Tijuana.

ICEs and hybrids scale effortlessly to power demand, locality and time ā€¦ full electric simply cannot.

Do you see the environmentalists not opposing expanding our power grid to take EVs? Because I see them fighting it tooth and nail.

I absolutely agree... This country should be in an outrage over covering for Ca’s mistakes and decisions. Starting with the fact they are the top receiver of Federal tax dollars over everything else in the nation. And they just keep wasting more and more.

Absolutely, they cannot have their cake and eat it too. It is a fanatical dream and will never work. But then... That may be exactly what they want.

We had an awesome coal plant in laughlin, 6 foot pipeline direct to the shale mines in Utah, electricity was 4-6 cents a KWH, now it’s 8, which is still the cheapest in the nation.

AZ regulators can keep their power local if they choose.

Or, dictate how much is for sale.

The massive grid system we have is irrational. If California generated it, it is theirs. AZ should have their own power plants.

The Texas grid isn’t directly tied to the rest of the country. And it is having shortages on its own because it let folks from up north and Germany set the policies. So now there are a lot of windmills that don’t turn when the wind isn’t blowing, and a lot of closed coal plants.
