U.S. and Russia Refuse to Back Down as Black Sea Tensions Rise
https://www.newsweek.com ^ | 7/2/21 | BY DAVID BRENNAN

ATO and Russian forces are both refusing to change course in the Black Sea, where recent military confrontations have raised fears of a sudden violent escalation dragging in the U.S., Russia, the European Union and Ukraine.

In recent weeks, Russian forces have confronted British and Dutch ships sailing close to Crimean territorial waters, a region annexed by Moscow in 2014, and considered Russian by Moscow. However, NATO allies have never accepted the annexation, while also condemning the Kremlin's 2014 invasion of Ukraine.

Russia claimed to have fired warning shots at the British destroyer HMS Defender—a claim denied by British defense officials—and Russian jets reportedly conducted mock attack runs against Dutch frigate HNLMS Evertsen.

The Black Sea has long been a hotspot for Western-Russian tensions. The Ukraine crisis made it an even more potent flashpoint, with Moscow's seizure of the strategically valuable peninsula winning it a strong outpost in the Black Sea to go along with its existing naval base in the coastal city of Sevastopol.

We should have done something about this and taken a strong stand in 1783. Unfortunately, we were preoccupied with concluding the treaty of Paris ending the Revolutionary War. But really George Washington could have acted when he came into office five years later as our first President.

Okay, I'll bite: How should George Washington have acted when he came into office five years later as our first President?

Regards,

We shouldn't have any intrest in the Black Sea.   The Bosporus and Dardanelles Straits are through Turkey.   The other countries around the Black Sea are the Balkan states and Russia.   We don't have a dog in this hunt.

So Putin is not a strategic threat to the West.

Putin sits atop a now stable Russia, which is a serious military power, has a vast land-mass and resources, is independent, its Russian-nationalistic, Christian and above all - it sits in Europe.

Thus its an existential threat to the philosophical and power of the Euro wing of the globalist project. That makes it a much bigger concern than China.

Perhaps we should fight Russia to return Crimea to the Ottomans, who had it before. Oh, wait, .... nevermind.

Half of Washington’s Farewell Address was about cultivating virtue as a people, living in peace in the world, and avoiding corrupting alliances and conflicts with other nations - especially in Europe.

I wonder what he’d say about flying gay flags at the embassy in Moscow, while arranging coups in Ukraine, as NATO planes daily buzz Russia’s borders?

I think the poster is referring to when Russia originally took over the Crimean Peninsula. The reality is, Khrushchev gave Crimea to the Ukrainian SSR in the 50s. Ukraine had no previous claim on the peninsula. Since the USSR was going to last forever, what difference would it make.

I think the poster is referring to when Russia originally took over the Crimean Peninsula.

He is referring specifically to the year in which George Washington ascended to the office of President of the U.S.

I'm waiting for him to reply to my question: Just what should Washington have done re. Russian intrusion into or activities on the Crimea?
