You can also use the gas mix to fill a large balloon and affix a fuse. If you substitute hydrogen for acetylene you can light a long fuse release it and share the fun with people downwind. I remember many years ago a friend of mine did this with an especially long fuse and a rather large balloon. And we released it at night. We waited and waited and thought the fuse went out we turned to leave our launch area and saw a flash. Again waited quite a while then heard the bang and felt the concussion wave. Good times.
Back in the day, we heated with gas, suppled thru Citizens Gas and Coke Co. of Indianapolis.
I found it was lighter than air, but barely.
Sometime between ‘63-65 I was filling a large bag made from a flimsy plastic painter’s 8’ x 12’ dropcloth . Folded over it made a 6x8 bag.
Due to the low gas pressure delivered to the house, it took over a 1/2 hour to get enough gas in it to be able to lift a fuse of 3 sparklers taped end to end.
The resulting large flame high above was quite spectacular at night!
Made the papers once as one was not very high as it passed a location about 2 miles from home. The police were called to investigate some wires that had fallen from a UFO! that was emitting sparks and flames as it passed overhead.
Wish I still had that clipping...
