How is this going to guarantee that people don’t overdose? Having worked in NY State’s prison system for 25 years, where drugs on the inside are illegal, and can get you outside criminal charges, how can they justify providing drugs to street users, but not to drug-using convicts doing time?

They do get drugs in prison now. We spend a fortune on methadone and pass it out like candy.

"They do get drugs in prison now. We spend a fortune on methadone and pass it out like candy."

Then it's good that I retired in 2003. When I first took the job in 1980, officers were responsible for handing out psychotropic drugs one eye-dropper full at a time, when we went down the galleries for the night count. The Union finally filed a grievance over it. We weren't medical staff, and never should have been made to do it to begin with. I have no idea how long it had been going on before the policy was overturned.
