(Obviously the disconnect comes from NATO still trying to pretend, 7+ years later, that Crimea is not Russian territory. For the record, Crimea is Russia and will never be Ukraine again).

It was never part of the Ukraine, it was part of the Ukrainian SSR, big difference.
