Videos showed pedestrians holding the attacker at bay with chairs and sticks .. He had a really big knife with him and was attacking people. Then many people tried to throw chairs or umbrellas or cellphones at him and stop.

Well, at least the German govt. won't sent a fleet of F-15s against them - or nuke them.

Well, depending on the crowd density and the range, I’ll quibble that maybe a better answer to the knife would be a shield and a bigger knife (or rapier, or in some situations a spear or other pole arm)...rather than a firearm. :-)

But I freely acknowledge that firearms weren’t specified but rather arms in general; it’s just that current day context almost always applies that to hand guns (and sometimes rifles). :-D
