Russia says next time it may fire to hit intruding warships

Russia is prepared to target intruding warships if they fail to heed warnings, a senior Russian diplomat declared Thursday after a Black Sea incident in which a British destroyer sailed near Crimea in an area that Russia claims as its territorial waters.

Russia said one of its warships fired warning shots and a warplane dropped bombs in the path of British destroyer Defender on Wednesday to drive it away from waters near the Crimean city of Sevastopol. Britain denied that account, insisted its ship wasn’t fired upon and said it was sailing in Ukrainian waters.

The incident marked the first time since the Cold War that Moscow acknowledged using live ammunition to deter a NATO warship, underlining the rising threat of military collisions amid Russia-West tensions.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Thursday that “the inviolability of the Russian borders is an absolute imperative,” adding that it will be protected “by all means, diplomatic, political and military, if needed.”

How dumb of the Royal Navy to deliberately provoke a superior force.

This is not WWII and the Russians are not the Nazis.

If they want to provoke somebody, make an unannounced port call in Hong Kong.

That was silly.
I would have said something to the effect of “Fool around and Find Out.”

“Not our circus, not our monkeys.”

Unfortunately not sure that is true if “our” refers to the establishment.

The “establishment” isn’t “us”. It’s “them”...

The Royal Navy has about as much business in the Black Sea as the Russian Navy has in the Irish Sea.

All in good time. This deployment for the RN carrier group is headed in that direction. This destroyer is detached from that carrier battle group.

BTW, there’s a USMC F-35 squadron embarked.

And it’s 10,000 sea miles between the two.

Sounds like a wonderful time for Blundering Biden to take a relaxing Black Sea holiday cruise.

As I understand it, some of the areas that Russia has either occupied or currently threaten to occupy in Ukraine (Crimea, eastern border areas) were Russian territory before the USSR and were given to the Ukrainian SSR by Khrushchev who was himself of Ukrainian descent. So it seems like a rather stupid idea for Ukraine to hold on to these areas where most of the population has ties to Russia.

It is certainly not some issue over which anyone should be risking a global nuclear war.

“Khrushchev who was himself of Ukrainian descent ...”

His parents, Sergei Khrushchev and Xeniya Khrushcheva, were ethnic Russians.

How dumb of the Russians to threaten open warfare with a nation whose best friends can kick Russia’s ass into the Dark Ages.

Just curious, but will you object if Russia invades and occupies Alaska? After all it used to belong to Russia and Russian nationalists like Vladimir Zhirinovsky say that Russia has a right to retake Alaska because the Tsar had no right to sell it.

Is it worth a global nuclear war for the US to keep Alaska or should we just let them take it?

What else do you think Russia can get away with stealing? They want Eastern Europe back...should we let them have it?
