Biden administration extends eviction moratorium through July

The Biden administration said Thursday that it would extend the temporary bans on evictions and foreclosures for another month as the country continues to rebound from the coronavirus pandemic.

The announcement comes as some states have struggled to spend the $21.5 billion in emergency rental aid included in the American Rescue Plan earlier this year, allowing states an additional month to work through a crush of applications and distribute the money before the funds expire.

Strangely enough, I don’t have much of a problem with this.

HEAR ME OUT!

If a government edict makes it impossible for someone to earn the money to pay rent, one reasonable response would be to ameliorate the risk of being evicted by yet another edict (not getting rid of the original edict, that’s just crazy talk!).

Okay, now follow me on this.

If a couple government edicts make it impossible for property owners to pay the mortgage, putting them at risk of foreclosure, (see where this is going?) rather than eliminate the edicts, the reasonable response is to have another edict forbidding financial institutions and private lenders from foreclosing...

These institutions and individuals now can’t pay their bills, sooooo...

Nothing the government does is temporary.

“I do not think the government is paying anyone’s rent under this program.”

They’re definitely paying peoples’ rent. I have a check for $13k right here in my hands from the government for rental assistance for one tenant.

I get payments from multiple counties and it seems how fast you get the money depends on the county, because one county was paying out 6 months ago and another county just started this month.

Sounds like de facto asset seizure to me.

Are you in Alabama? I know that in large municipalaties in this state were handled by a different group. Where I am is not very populated and it is the state administering the payments.

Nah, I’m in Illinois, here each county seems to be handling it themselves.

Are you in Alabama?

I am in Alabama (roll tide!). I'm a manager of a 250 unit apartment complex. We've been very disappointed at how this Emergency Rental Assistance Alabama (ERAA) Program is being handled. We have 25 renters that have applied for assistance all the way back in February and they have jumped thru all the hoops that they were required to do. We've been calling for status updates every few weeks and basically keep getting told the same thing..."its in process". We're losing faith quickly.

Even worse, there is no moratorium on collecting property taxes from the homeowners.

Landlord rights have been steadily eroded in some parts of this country that we in effect have the Quartering Act of colonial times. It may have been a sound strategy to get ahead years ago, but I don’t know anyone who owns rental property now who thinks it was a good idea; people who are able to pay their rent have simply stopped, and there is presently nothing to be done about it - but you’d better make sure the taxes are paid and the property is in tip-top shape!

Make no mistake, the Left wants to get rid of private landlords, at least those who aren’t politically connected. They want to dictate where you live.

They don’t want to get rid of them; they want them to serve the interests of the government instead of themselves (just as many large “private” companies already do). If they can determine who you house and for how much, they are fine with maintaining the illusion of the independent property owner - or else nobody would operate rental properties.
