They can. And they are doing it now. Much worse things are coming.
As long as they can maintain control over the police and military, they will continue. Then they will lose that control and things will change drastically.

Currently they are letting business and city governments do their dirty work, can't force us but they can make it very hard to exist without conforming. What population this century has been able to defeat the rise of Marxism once they control the election process?
