I looked the building up on Bing maps.

It is a really strange structure, built just off the ocean.

From the aerial view, it looks like it was constructed in four sections.

It was built in 1981, which means the foundation is either on bedrock, or else they hammered pilings down to anchor it on bedrock.

I presume that just one of the four sections collapsed.

I tried to post the aerial photo here, but it will not stick.

Bedrock in South Florida? That’s funny!

Lot of pilings driven into the sand/muck.

The old-fashioned way to build tall building on the beach was to build many platforms with poles going into the ground and then set the building on the platforms to distribute the weight. That was in the 1950s. There may be a better way now.
