FBI Director Chris Wray on Wednesday pleaded with public companies and other hacking victims to avoid paying ransom, saying he fears it will only embolden cyber criminals to ramp up future attacks.

The Justice Department has disclosed it managed to help the Colonial Pipeline Co recover some $2.3 million in cryptocurrency ransom it paid to hackers...
The FBI was able to recover those funds because it had a private key that it was able to use to unlock a bitcoin wallet holding most of the money. It was unclear how the FBI managed to access the key.

So following the same logic,I suppose Wray should be cutting off funding to Hamas since they pay suicide bombers to blow up Israelis?
Because the FBI knows how to handle this. From the DNC servers to the Sony hack to the Colonial Pipeline to the state and municipal computer hacks and everything in-between, the FBI shows great competence.
what a completely incompetent, evil ahole. WHAT, pray tell, are these companies supposed to do to get their data back???? OMG My brother in law had his law firm taken captive and the FBI told him to pay them; there was nothing else anyone, including the FBI, could do. Utterly powerless.

Most likely, the FBI were the “hackers.”
When the government predictably failed, the pipeline had to pay up and put their best face on it.
And half the country wants to turn their health care over to these incompetent fools?
Hospitals===nuclear power plants...if any hackers manages to tap into such places it would be urgent to unlock it.
If you’re a medical device or pharmaceutical manufacturer computers are required to back up each night to an off site server. Our company was hit with malware, fortunately early in the morning, our IT team wiped the servers and reinstalled the backed up data from the night before.
And we are only a mid-sized company.
That’s what colonial ended up doing after they were dumb enough to pay the ransom.
