Shane Fuhrman cites ‘threats’ and ‘divisiveness’ as reasons, but gives no further explanation..
The mayor of Silverton suspended recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance at town meetings Monday, saying the pledge has led to threats and community divisiveness.
“Due to direct and indirect threats, inappropriate comments in and out of public meetings, and the general divisiveness this is creating in our community, we will not be doing the Pledge of Allegiance during town of Silverton board of trustee meetings,” said Mayor Shane Fuhrman during Monday’s town board meeting. “And it’s removed from agendas and our protocols until such time that we can discuss this at a board retreat or workshop.”
Fuhrman did not respond to requests seeking comment, including what issues led to his action. Trustee Molly Barela objected to the mayor’s decision, which led to a testy exchange.
“Any other unilateral decisions we need to know about?” Barela asked upon hearing the mayor’s announcement.
Fuhrman responded: “If you’d like to find somewhere in the code that does not permit me to do this, I welcome that discussion at our next meeting.”
Barela responded: “It’s just been done for a long time. We all took an oath. And we, as the board, collectively decided it would be done.”
The mayor moved on, and opened the meeting to public comment. Near the end of the public comment period, an individual said she wanted to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.
About nine attendees and two board members – Barela and Trustee Jim Harper – stood and joined in reciting the pledge.
After they were done, Fuhrman said the individuals were out of order and warned they would have to leave if there were any other disruptions.
Multiple town trustees, including Barela, did not respond to requests for comment Thursday.
It is not the first time the Pledge of Allegiance has caused division in Silverton, a town of about 550 people in the San Juan Mountains.
In 2018, a Silverton resident nearly faced charges of harassment and menacing for verbally attacking a former trustee member who did not stand during the Pledge of Allegiance.
Since May 3, Fuhrman and another board member have remained seated during the Pledge of Allegiance, according to meeting videos posted online.
Monday night’s meeting was the first for Silverton’s newest town administrator, Gloria Kaasch-Buerger, who has worked as an association coordinator for the Colorado City and County Managers Association. Silverton’s sixth town administrator in seven years resigned in February.
Colorado Ping ( Let me know if you wish to be added or removed from the list.)
He doesn’t have the right or power to do so if the board decided it. “threats” be damned.
Again - it’s time to start forcing these communists out or we will lose the nation.
Surprise surprise.
When they’re done throwing out the Pledge, the Flag, the Bill of Rights and the Constitution, guess we’ll just have anarchy and warlords. And they call themselves “progressives”. Glad I don’t have too many years to watch the “progress”.
Mayor’s resume.
“Before moving to Silverton I lived in New York for 16 years (and really learned to appreciate how great Colorado is). I began my career as a corporate and finance attorney. In 2013 I moved on to entrepreneurship, first as co-founder of a financial inclusion start-up in Rwanda, and eventually pursued real estate, hospitality, and community design.
I love to ski, mountain bike, rock climb, hike, and stand up paddle board.
My parents Barbara and Steve, and my sister Seanna, also love the mountains.
EDUCATION
Brooklyn Law School, Brooklyn, NY
Juris Doctor, cum laude, June 2007”
A little about the Mayor. But, first, how in the hell did he get elected? Is Silverton a small, liberal hamlet in the mountains?

Brooklyn Law School, Brooklyn, NY and Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY....I’ll go out on a limb and say that his law school professors were as liberal as they can get and Skidmore is a snooty, liberal school in upstate NY.
I can sum up everything about the mayor....I’m a big city liberal that would love to live in a small mountain town. I like to stick my nose in everyone’s business because I’m smarter than they are and I know what’s best for them. And I yearn to recruit more liberals like myself to move to Silverton so we can carve out a nice liberal.....WHITE....utopia. It will be amazing. As long as I’m in charge.
Arm yourself and.............. Oh, probably no principles.
One look at the Mayor and he won’t last 5 seconds against any warlords and anarchists.
You beat me to it.
Something’s rotten in Silverton.
For several years I was planning on moving to Silverton (beautiful, interesting area). Glad I didn’t!!!
Californians. They are fleeing their state in droves to escape high crime, the homeless drug addicts, high taxes, and cost of living. They are engaging in bidding wars driving home prices to insane levels. Demanding locals succumb to their WOKE politics, etc...
And, when they get to the new state they Vote for everything they are running away from.
This is happening in numerous western states. Most of their neighboring states to the east are sparsely populated in comparison so, it doesn’t take all that many Californians and their money to have a major influence on local politics.
88 percent white. Huge liberal area. Whites are actually the problem with all this woke crap.
In a small town it takes so few people to really screw things up.
Invasion of woke leftists who fled their mess that they created.
Shut the place down.
Make them all wear tied off plastic bags over their heads.
Remove Silverton from the US.
Another Colorado Coward. John Denver should have sung “Coward of the County” about this clown.
