Iran’s president-elect said Monday he will not meet U.S. President Joe Biden nor negotiate over Tehran’s ballistic missile program and its support of hardline regional Islamic terror groups.
Judiciary chief Ebrahim Raisi called himself as a “defender of human rights” when asked about his involvement in the 1988 mass execution of some 5,000 people, the official IRNA news agency reports.
Raisi made the comments in his first post-election press conference in Tehran.
He warned “the U.S. is obliged to lift all oppressive sanctions against Iran” while demanding a return to the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) nuclear agreement as delivered by former President Barack Obama.
Protracted negotiations led by then-Secretary of State John Kerry closed the deal, widely viewed as the Obama administration’s signature foreign policy achievement.
President Donald Trump ended it in keeping with a campaign promise.

Raisi underwent extensive theological training and holds the title of ‘Hojatoleslam’, which literally means “authority on Islam.” In Iran's religious hierarchy, the position is second only to ayatollah.
According to Amnesty International, Raisi was involved in extrajudicial executions in 1988 as a member of the country's “death commission.”...that at least 5,000 regime opponents were murdered; the real number may actually be higher since many prisoners who were released were later arrested again and secretly executed....so instead of being investigated for the crimes against humanity of murder, enforced disappearance and torture, he's now their new President.
He was appointed prosecutor general of Karaj, a suburb of Tehran, at the age of 20. It was the first of many positions he would hold in the judiciary. He later became a judge, and since 2019 he has headed up the country's judiciary.
Observers expect Raisi to take an even tougher line against Israel and to clamp down further on the Iran's limited freedom of expression.
