Cinco De Mayo is not an official holiday. Nor is it Mexican independence day. It is the day some obscure little village beat back the French Army.

inco de Mayo, or the fifth of May, is a holiday that celebrates the Mexican army’s victory over France at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862 during the Franco-Mexican War. ...

These are the last idiots that should be voting for their own federal holidays. Voting for my own paid day off seems highly suspect.

Cinco de Mayo isn’t even Mexico’s independence day, which is September 16th. May 5th is just a celebration of Mexico defeating the French in a battle.

Not exactly. A detachment was ‘defeated’ then the Army came in and whacked the Mexicans.

Good luck with that if you’re of the Caucasian persuasion.

While I’d have no problem marking the end of slavery in the US - that happened in December, not June. June 19 was merely the end of slavery in Texas...

I’m surprised that the congressrats didn’t make it a holiday that would be observed on a Monday to give folks another 3 day weekend. I wonder if there will be a chance, if it will ever be abolished as a Federal/state holiday?

Remember Father’s Day is no more, it is now “Sperm Donor’s Day,” that makes it aligned with “Birthing Person’s Day.”

” holiday that celebrates the Mexican army’s victory over France at the Battle of Puebla”

Holding your fort while the enemy runs out of ammo may be called a small victory but certainly not a victory over France.

Might as well make the day the French sank The Rainbow Warrior a national holiday.

The holiday may have begun under the best of meanings, but Communists have made it their own . . .

If they get 4 weeks out of the gate that’s excessive...

Federal Civil Service starts out with 13 vacation days per year. You can negotiate up when you hire on.

“May 5th is just a celebration of Mexico defeating the French in a battle.”

A few days later, the French occupied the city on their way to Mexico City.

Govt workers get paid not to work on yet another, newly created, national holiday. These govt holidays are not necessarily observed, if at all, on the actual day declared. The days are flexible for the convenience of employees so are attached to the weekend, Sat and Sun. What do the non govt workers get out of this declaration of another national holiday? I think all tax payers are govt employees and are entitled to also be paid not to work, same as the feds. And not in the form of a tax deduction but a check in the mail.

We use a Personal Time Off model. It used to be vacation plus five sick days. Now it’s just PTO. I was at four weeks vacation so now I get five weeks PTO. Since I carried one week over I’ve got a week band=ked for sickness.

This works out to $26,000 a year of paid time off - 50 8-hour days at $65.00 an hour... DOD pays well...
