The shooter and others (FBI, etc.) probably fear some people or people might seek out revenge.
Hence the protection.
I do Not condone any revenge, I want a proper trial and our Justice system involved.

The murderer wasn’t FBI (or are you saying it was) and police who kill people have their names routinely revealed despite the possibility of revenge.
We knew Derek Chauvin’s name the next day. Did no one GAF about retribution then?
They don't give one good goddamn about that when it's a police office shooting a black victim. Name is released within 24 hours.
The standard of justice these days depends on the victims race and politics.
