It was the media that got us into this mess. Once the virus got out they wanted to make it into a big deal to sell ad space. Then they kept it going to discredit Trump and to keep the attention on the fear and the mitigation of lockdowns masks and social distancing so that nobody would dig too deeply into the causes. Part of why they stretched it out for a year was they were learning more and more about what was possible.
There were plenty of people who actually hoped that it would be much worse. Just imagine all the cool shit that would be just lying around if 10% of the population croaked. You know how popular The Walking Dead was? That is what some people hoped for.
