Those would have worked great in Texas back during the snowstorm. February. Are people supposed to plug in their cars and hope the power comes back on?
When the power goes out, the electricity to pump gasoline into your gas tank is gone there too. But if we’re forced into battery-powered cars without building out generating capacity, we are very screwed.
I was the only House in my area that had power for four days during the snow storm. Why? Because my 15,000 watt tracking axis solar system worked every day even under clouds they still put out over 1200 watts. All my neighbors came over when they saw my lights still on. We had BBQ and cold beers while they marveled at my systems set up. My heat pumps has the house at 85 during the day everyone’s in shorts and Ts the covered pool was also at 80. Four of my neighbors now have panels up they won’t be dark again ever. At night since the house has thermal mass built in the walls and floors it never got below 70 inside before the sun came up again. The 8” of snow cannot stick to panels covered in hydrophobic coatings it just slide right off of them as they tracked the sun at a 35 degree angle. For $12000 I can put up a 15kw per hour system that in sunny Texas will run your meter backwards so much every month the power company pays you. For a 3500 sqft or smaller home 15,000 watt system will generate a negative power bill 12 of 12 month’s and pay it self off in 5 years or less if you contract as a peak power provider to the local grid the minimum size of that system is 15,000 watts. Home values in this location are 650,000 to 2 million a $12000 investment on a mortgage loan is nothing. The panels have a 25 year capacity warranty and a hail rating plus home owners insurance coverage as do the inverters. Bulk panels are 15 cents per watt and inverters are 20 a competent Electrician can run the transfer breakers for under a grand and four guys can out the panels up in 8 hours labor which even at $15 hr is a small fraction of the value of the system.
I would guess the answer to that is that you make sure that you have a generator. And that you have your own source of gas (if it's banned, would we be using propane instead? because we would still use propane for the grill)
