A day after the Justice Department said it would continue to try to defend former President (Donald Trump) in a defamation case filed by writer E. Jean Carroll, Democrats of the House judiciary committee called on Attorney General ( Merrick Garland) to reverse the decision.
On Monday, the department filed a brief stating it would continue the department's legal effort that began under the Trump administration to try and defend the former president against allegations of defamation.
[snip]In the briefing filed Monday, the Justice Department admitted Trump's comments were "crude and disrespectful" but argued the case does not hinge on whether his response was appropriate nor whether what he said is true -- the case is about whether his response to her fell within "the scope of his office or employment."

Advice columnist E. Jean Caroll sued President Donald Trump for defamation, stating his denials of her accusation that he sexually assaulted her more than 20 years ago damaged her reputation.
Carroll filed the suit in the New York Supreme Court on Monday alleging Trump made “express statements and deliberate implications” that accused her of lying about the rape in order to increase sales of her memoir — where she first publicly described the assault — as well as to carry out a political agenda by advancing a conspiracy with the Democratic Party.
She added that Trump’s statements “inflicted emotional pain and suffering, they damaged her reputation and they caused substantial professional harm.”
“Trump knew that these statements were false; at bare minimum he acted with reckless disregard for their truth or falsity,” the complaint stated.
Had Trump just denied the allegations rather than explicitly calling her a liar she would have no claim. Often, his shoot from the hip approach can be his own worst enemy.
Its impossible to defame a member of the fake news media. They are that evil.
As for the Justice Department “defending” President Trump, President Trump needs that like hole in the head. That would be like a Jew hiring Hitler to defend him in 1942.
Bias much???? Trump scares the crap out of democrats... he is the monster under their bed and is the thing that goes thump in the night that wakes them up. He is the man.
Perhaps. But I think Trump would be better served in having his own legal team handling his defense in this rather than DOJ lawyers. His own attorneys would have more interest in winning the case than bureaucrat lawyers would.

If you correctly point out that the accusations are false, and that the kook is just trying to cash in on a made-up story, oh that's a bad thing.
How can such a flake be "defamed"?
