An interesting book to read is 1493 by Charles Mann.

Thanks, doesn't sound like you consider it a kid's book. I listen to a lot of audio books, and have looked at that and 1491, but have been put off because some sites describe them as excellent kids books. I suppose that shouldn't matter, and think I'll try one.

Both european and african diseases killed off 95% of indians in north and south america. African diseases killed of europeans in central south and north america.

Which brings us to the politically incorrect question of whether syphilis originated in the New World transported to the old by Columbus, or perhaps a new more virulent strain, or maybe not. Actually a bunch of diseases here like tb, giardia, rabies and such pre Columbus.

I think the book mentions syphilis. As well, I think that the book puts the origins of the syphilis in the new world. But that one is fuzzy to me.

imho you’ll find the book eye opening. In any case, I did.
