A report on the origins of Covid-19 by a U.S. government national laboratory concluded that the hypothesis claiming the virus leaked from a Chinese lab in Wuhan is plausible and deserves further investigation, according to people familiar with the classified document. The study was prepared in May 2020 by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California and was drawn on by the State Department when it conducted an inquiry into the pandemic’s origins during the final months of the Trump administration.

Apparently, science says it could not have come directly from bats. The human body has natural defenses against that happening. Thus the discussion of an intermediate animal who can pass viruses for which there is not natural immunity. Not sure I understand that part.
However the structure of the covid virus has the ability to evade human immunity. That is the definition of the gain of function research being done in Wuhan.
In addition, the fact that it is transmissible through the air is another property uncharacteristic of animal viruses and another avenue of Wuhan research.
Yes, I believe the evidence points only to a lab virus. More evidence seems to be coming in daily, now.

Reason I ask is that they found the intermediate mammal for SARS-1 and for MERS.
