Energy secretary says enemies are capable of shutting down US power grid

Adversaries to the US are capable of shutting down the nation’s electrical grid, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm admitted Sunday, saying that such cybersecurity attacks are “happening all the time.”

Granholm warned of the system’s vulnerabilities — amid an uptick of ransomware sieges — on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

“Yeah, they do,” Granholm told host Jake Tapper when asked if foreign actors have the ability to make the power grid go dark.

“There are very malign actors who are trying, even as we speak,” she explained. “There are thousands of attacks on all aspects of the energy sector and the private sector generally.”

Some things need to be on private networks, isolated from the web. Sure, it’s inconvenient (for some), but hey.

I believe this is an implied thread. Say, if the vote audits don’t stop there ‘could’ be a power outtage.

FReepers, please make sure you’re prepared for potential politically motivated power outages.

Does this mean that when a section of grid scrams because the solar cells and windmills don’t produce during peak demand that... we’re going to blame “The Russians”? Every Democrat’s favorite bogeyman.

I was explaining this Thursday to the guy who was topping off my propane gas tanks. I have serious supplies of propane gas and a large propane generator. (Whose first job is for hurricanes)

I believe Iran is likely to activate their moles here with any serious conflict with us (or possibly Israel) and down our electrical grid.

Spoofed, would accomplish nothing. If only the world’s problems were as Siple as FR experts think they are.

Meaning, the United States government is cooperating with Communist China to shut down the US power grid for the benefit of worldwide communism. Terrible times are coming, friends. Worse than any in the lifetime of most.

A small portable gasoline generator can run a gas station. If it’s really bad you can pump it by hand.

Thanks. Are we being set up?

She’s Projecting an attack on the US electrical grid for if when the big steal is in jeopardy. I’d bet on it and that’s probably going to be concurrent with some other major catastrophe

Cyber security attacks are easy to block.
You just need to hire the right people and dump the bad ones.

A “uh, yeah” ping.

Like so?

Operations computers are physically isolated from the internet (at least electricidal grid operators). In the trade it’s known as “airgapping”. Peripherals like USB ports or modems or any other potential communications devices are disabled and meticulous record keeping is maintained. Programs like email aren’t installed on Operations computers and wouldn’t work even if they were because the necessary ports for internet access are blocked.

All of this is carefully designed and enforced by NERC (North American Electric Reliability Corporation).

In order to access an Operations computer one needs to physically sit down at the terminal. They aren’t connected to the internet so they cannot be hacked.

Water systems? I haven’t got a clue.
