We would all have to agree, I think, that 2020–21 was a banner year for dangerous clowns and their quack brethren, starting with the lunatics whose successful gain-of-function genetic research succeeded in turning a harmless bat virus into Covid-19, the virus that causes a kind of human ’flu that shut down the world and killed off thousands of old folks. Then we should include all the political and medical quacks who made sure that effective treatments, well-known to all real, competent physicians for years, were unavailable, even forbidden, and who went on to cause incalculable social and psychological damage by isolating everyone, even little children, behind useless face masks.
The science that produced the altered virus was genuine enough, though unquestionably of the kind that Winston Churchill called “perverted.” The one thing entirely missing from the story of that science, though, is an explanation of the motive behind it. Why were people in America and China doing this research? Why was the American government funding it? As time passed and the management of the disease took on all the characteristics of what we have learned to call a control system, some of us began to wonder whether fantasies of control underlay the ultimate motivation for the production of the virus. After all, isn’t power and the control that goes with it the motivation for all scientific research?

What else besides terror of Trump explains the deafening chorus of quackery rising from those institutions during the past four years as they thought up or signed on to one bogus scheme after another to remove him? And what, other than the Chinese virus, could have possibly set the stage for the kind of social control they needed if the deed was to be done? Answer? Nothing, a conclusion that leads us to a general rule: whenever the quacks are out in force a thinking observer should look for the real motive behind their activity, because it is never the ostensible one.
