Washington (AFP) - Forty years ago this month the first men began dying of a mysterious disease in California that would later be identified as AIDS.
It would go on to claim millions of lives across the world.
Here is a look at the discovery and the fight against the deadly condition.
- 1981: First alert -
In June 1981 US epidemiologists report five cases of a rare form of pneumonia in gay men from California, some of whom have died. Unusual versions of skin cancer are identified in others.
It is the first alert about Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), still unknown and unnamed.
Doctors identify "opportunistic infections" among injected drug-users late in the year and in hemophiliacs and Haitian residents in the United States (mid-1982).
The term AIDS appears for the first time in 1982.

Yesterday, there was a posting on Free Republic where Luc Montagnier is supposedly claiming that everyone who has gotten a covid vaccine will die in two years. It was a hot topic yesterday on FR.

I’m told that the first symptom of AIDS is a pounding in the arse.
The worst part of an aids diagnoses is trying to convince your parents that you are Haitian.
Fauci is going to get right on that with a vaccine.
AIDS was it’s second name. GRID (gay related immune deficiency) was what it was called before politics intervened. Homosexuals were the first group affected quickly followed by IV drug addicts. Those two groups are linked because of male addicts prostituting themselves. IV drug addicts spread it further through the spread of needles and homosexuals spread it further by donating blood.
Luc Montagnier is not the only one making that prediction.
The government also responded by initially supporting tracking and shutting down socialization points where men were proven to have contracted it. The gays got together with the ACLU to oppose it. Decrying it as unconstitutional that the government would shut down businesses where gay men could go and have anonymous sex.
To think 40 years later, the exact same people (well, the ones who survived) would turn around and demand the exact same treatment for every American over a disease that has a 99.9% chance of survival.
If we instituted covid-19 restrictions over AIDS, we’d have eliminated the disease as a public health threat.
Fauchi makes money off the disease. Other 6 researchers make $150,000 a year in royalties.
In the northeast, people were calling it "the gay plague."
