With Emboldened Republicans at the Helm, Texas Steers Hard Right
News.yahoo.com ^ | 6/2/21 | Edgar Sandoval

Another factor has been the disappearance of the moderate Republican guardrails.

In past legislative sessions, Bush-style Republicans, including the former speaker of the House, Joe Straus of San Antonio, blocked many bills put forth by the far right, including killing a so-called bathroom bill in 2017 that would have restricted which bathroom transgender people can use in public buildings and schools. Straus and many of his moderate allies are gone now from the Legislature, replaced in large part by pro-Trump Republicans who have taken to criticizing Gov. Greg Abbott for not being conservative enough.

The state’s Republican leadership thrived in the Obama era, in much the same way that California’s Democratic leadership relished being the liberal antidote in the Trump era. Now Texas Republicans are playing the antagonist once again during the Biden administration, all while intraparty skirmishes have broken out and far-right grassroots activists prepare for next year’s Republican primaries.

“They’re flexing their muscle going into the 2022 primaries, so they’re all looking over their right shoulders and I think that’s driving a lot of this,” said state Rep. Chris Turner, chair of the House Democratic Caucus. “They certainly are pushing the envelope in a way they haven’t before.”

Joe Straus was the John Boehner/Paul Ryan of Texas.

Isn't it amazing how much you can accomplish without "moderate" Republicans thwarting you.

When it’s liberals it’s an ‘antidote’ and when it’s conservatives they’re ‘antagonists’. Yahoo strikes again.

Following the law and the Constitution is considered “far right” these days.

Whoever controls the narrative controls the public. 90% of Americans are too busy or lethargic to do any objective research.

It's like going to church. We no longer read the Bible on our own. We expect the preacher to give us the Cliff Notes version.

Yahoo is not a credible news outlet, as most everyone here is aware of. They are nothing but a Leftist propaganda mill. And yet, they reach millions of people daily who do not know that.

I suspect they reach a much larger audience than CNN and MSNBC combined.

“Yahoo is not a credible news outlet”

Yes, you’re correct. But it’s good to read the undercurrents, see what they are upset about.

A now long time NYT writer with experience in south Texas.

Any NYT writer is a lib.

I meant to include Cotton1706 in the prior comment, so I apologize for that.

“.... But it’s good to read the undercurrents, see what they are upset about.”

What are those people not upset about as they seem to be in a perpetual state of drama.

“As long as you’re a white, Christian evangelical, gun-loving, Bible-toting, race-baiting person, hell yeah, Texas is for you,” Johnson, who is B black, said in an interview. “They got all kinds of freedoms for them.

Typical prog, hiding behind the race card excuse.

The laws of Texas do not include exemptions for whites or Christian.

The prog are either too stupid or too partisan to realize or admit that Texas laws insure freedom for everyone.

They would rather run away in a howling hooting pack.

I disagree. How many people voted for Trump and could tell you why? Our problem is we only hear about the lethargic Americans or the hard left, we never see the real Americans who are doing something. They don't get reporters talking to them.

And I go to a large church where the Pastor actually waits while people open their Bible to the reference. I'll give you the address in VA if you want.

Don't bother. The fact that you call the preacher "pastor" tells me you don't read your Bible in any meaningful way. You probably have mechanical instruments of music in your collective "worship", as well, don't you?

I rest my case.

Pastor - Ephesians 4:11 - a shepherd, it is a transliteration, but since you only use Jehovah or Jeshua in your services, you are probably a better Christian than anybody.

Mechanical instruments of worship - like all those listed in the Old Testament

https://www.journal33.org/other/html/otinstr.htm

However, there is no mention of instruments in the New Testament so that precludes us from using them since we should obey commandments from silence, or whatever you think the commandment is.
