% Total Population with at least a First Shot: 50.8 (flat)

Those ≥ 18 Years of Age (Adults): 62.9% (up 0.1)

Those ≥ 65 Years of Age: 86% (up 0.1) (74.9% Fully Vaccinated - flat)

Cases have dropped very significantly - now below 10K/day (20K/day had been discussed as a critical threshold, marking control of the disease).

Deaths New Hospitalizations also Fell, continuing downward trends.

431 Deaths (Downward).

Some of yesterday's extreme lows has been made up, but the down trend is still strengthening for the 7 day moving average - very encouraging.

Note that for the past ten days, the US is averaging less than one new hospitalization per 100k people per day and falling daily.

“Rapid diagnosis is key to curtailing the Covid-19 pandemic. One path to such rapid diagnosis may rely on identifying volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by the infected body, or in other words, identifying the smell of the infection. Consistent with this rationale, dogs can use their nose to identify Covid-19 patients. Given the scale of the pandemic, however, animal deployment is a challenging solution. In contrast, electronic noses (eNoses) are machines aimed at mimicking animal olfaction, and these can be deployed at scale. To test the hypothesis that SARS CoV-2 infection is associated with a body-odor detectable by an eNose, we placed a generic eNose in-line at a drive-through testing station. We applied a deep learning classifier to the eNose measurements, and achieved real-time detection of SARS CoV-2 infection at a level significantly better than chance, for both symptomatic and non-symptomatic participants. This proof of concept with a generic eNose implies that an optimized eNose may allow effective real-time diagnosis, which would provide for extensive relief in the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Just proof of concept. But lots of advances being made with all the money thrown at covid.
One day doctors may have “Bones’ “ Star Trek analyzer...

Wouldn’t surprise me if lots of health care workers take the week off and that drops the vax numbers.
Those people got to be worn out!

maybe they should use dogs to sniff all the “disease carrying invaders” that biden is spreading across our country after opening our border during a “global pandemic”...

So half the population has not taken the experimental vaccine.

I do not feel so alone.

You probably don’t need to. From your comments you’ve made on your traveling you’ve likely gotten natural immunity, though it’s best if there’s a test to verify.

Waiting on info on natural immunity efficacy against the more transmissable variants. But I don’t expect anything dramatic.
If there is bad news, if, then people can take that under consideration.

Studies I’ve seen so far only really compare antibody titers between those who’ve had mild COVID-19, severe COVID-19, and those vaccinated.

Examples include:

https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-020-20247-4
https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.04.15.440089v2.full.pdf

The vaccinated and severe cases show similar immune response. Mild cases show lower response. There’s still a lot of work to do to establish the precise relationship between antibody titers and protection from infection. Some discussion on that is here: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-021-01377-8

When the discussion expands into variants, you have to talk about Manaus and P.1: https://www.thelancet.com/article/S0140-6736(21)00183-5/fulltext

We do know (from clinical trial tests) that the vaccines available in the US are still highly effective against the Brazil, South Africa, and India variants. Less effective than they are against the April 2020 variant or the original Wuhan virus, but still very effective.

You certainly aren’t alone, but about 85% of seniors and 63% of adults have already taken a COVID-19 vaccine, and hundreds of thousands more get their shot every day. I would project that by the end of August, we’ll see roughly 80% of the adult population fully vaccinated and probably closer to 90% by the end of this year.

Full FDA approval for Pfizer and Moderna coming later this summer coupled with news stories about minor outbreaks in the US and major outbreaks in other countries with fewer vaccinated people will drive many of those who were waiting (but not otherwise opposed) to finally get vaccinated.

Some people never will, and that’s fine. Not every single person needs it in order for herd immunity to provide protection. Just need most people on board.

Thanks.
I guess the first news will be lab studies of naturally immune antibodies against the variants.
I saw such studies about vaccines- guess the companies paid for them. No one will pay for a petri-dish study of natural antibodies’ efficacy?

As long as they get around to it before winter.

I think that’s great news.

But I also think it’s a combination of factors.

Summer time the virus slows.
Natural immunity from getting the virus.
Vaccinations.

We still had a significant wave last summer as new areas got hit, so this isn’t like the flu where it completely disappears in the summer.

If we have no wave this summer, I’d say that’s a great sign that we’re in a much better place than last year. Assuming we hit ~80% of adults vaccinated by end of summer (and we should), then I don’t expect we’ll see any significant wave this winter either. Barring, of course, the emergence of a variant with more significant changes to the S protein structure. However, the nice thing about the S protein is that it can only change but so much before it stops working. It’s a key to a lock. You can change the key’s shape within certain limits, but that’s it. So far, we’ve seen all manner of changes to SARS-CoV-2, but nothing that’s broken the vaccines because the virus can’t function without that key working.

I agree with that although I’d rank them inversely.

“I also think it’s a combination of factors.

I agree.

But vaccination grew to become the dominant factor, because of its scale. More than ten times the rate of natural infection over the last few months.

Vaccination also allows precise targeting of immunity, to the most vulnerable, disproportionally alleviating the mortality and hospitalization burden. We now have about 86% of those 65 or older with at least a first shot. That is powerful, in reducing the impact/cost of the disease.

Natural infection has some powerful characteristics of its own. It naturally targets those high contact people, who play the biggest role as vectors to transmit the disease. That is stronger to choke off case numbers.

They are a great team.

•Natural. Herd. Immunity.

•Safe, proven and effective preventatives.

That’s a winning combo - that SHOULD have been the priority/focus from DAY ONE - right there.

😉
