Relationship with Jake Bergmann[edit]
Fried's fiancée, Jake Bergmann, is a prominent marijuana entrepreneur in Florida.[34] Her relationship with Bergmann has been criticized as a conflict of interest, as Bergmann's business often results in dealings with the Florida Department of Agriculture.[35][36] As a result, Bergmann's 2019 purchase of a $700,000 house in Tallahassee for Fried was seen a possible violation of Florida's gift laws, which does not allow elected officials to receive gifts over $100, even if the person offering the gift is a romantic partner.[37][38]
In June 2020, Fried and Bergmann were engaged in a verbal argument at a hotel in Fort Lauderdale resulting from a car accident in the parking lot of the hotel. A security guard who witnessed the incident claimed that Bergmann threw a trash can and shoved Fried, though Fried denies the latter.[39][40] Bergmann was escorted off of the property by the Fort Lauderdale Police Department and a formal police report was filed, but no arrest was made.[41] Following the incident, Fried denied that Bergmann was physically abusive to her and purged a number of high-level staffers who criticized him.[42][43]
