Meijer comes from western Michigan, the area Gerald Ford represented for many years. The area has a strong Dutch heritage, and is home to several conservative Calvinist denominations. Like many historically Republican areas, there is a tendency to defer to the GOP establishment, e.g. Ford, a moderate Republican. However, I suspect that since the Democrats have taken ownership of the unpopular COVID lockdowns as well as sexual perversity and uncontrolled chaos in Chicago and elsewhere, the western Michigan electorate will defeat Meijer in the primary. The Dutch are akin to the Saxon of Kipling's poem, slow to anger but fierce when aroused.
