An online trend that involves using tiny magnets as fake tongue piercings has led the NHS to call for them to be banned amid people swallowing them.
Ingesting more than one of them can be life-threatening and cause significant damage within hours.
In England, 65 children have required urgent surgery after swallowing magnets in the last three years.
The NHS issued a patient safety alert earlier this month and is now calling for the small metal balls to be banned.
It said the "neodymium or 'super strong' rare-earth magnets are sold as toys, decorative items and fake piercings, and are becoming increasingly popular".
It added that unlike traditional ones, "these 'super strong' magnets are small in volume but powerful in magnetism and easily swallowed".
The online trend sees people placing two such magnets on either side of their tongue to create the illusion that the supposed piercing is real.
But when accidentally swallowed, the small magnetic ball bearings are forced together in the intestines or bowels, squeezing the tissue so that the blood supply is cut off.

do they stick to the “vaccine” sites as reported???
Swallowing 23 magnets "accidentally"??
Worth publicizing so people understand the risk, but banning???
Words fail me.
With you on that. It’s been known for some time that these are incredibly dangerous to toddlers especially, who are wont to stick just about anything that fits into their mouths. The problem is if they swallow a couple, they can pinch an perforate an intestine in short order.
I was using some on a few woodworking projects where I wanted something more aggressive than the usual magnetic latch. Worked great at first, but then the magnet proved stronger than the glue. They are useful, but definitely not toys.

The danger isn’t 23 magnets. It’s anything over 1 magnet. And young kids don’t necessarily do it accidentally. “Mickie” eats anything...

I remember magnets being sold to place in a cow’s stomachs to pick up wire and bits of other hardware they ingest in the grass.
“Cow magnets are widely used by ranchers and dairy farmers to help prevent Hardware Disease in their cattle. ... Cow magnets help prevent this disease by attracting stray metal from the folds and crevices of the rumen and recticulum. One magnet works for the life of the cow!”

For decades now, the ruling elites of most western nations seem to have an unfortunate predilection to always base laws in terms of the lowest common denominator. “If it saves just one life”, right?

Guess you never had kids.
Came up in your search for “amazing crap involving magnetism”, did it?
A lot of this comes from the cheap Chinese knock-offs of the Magformers toys. These strong magnets detach and break off.
Toddlers and young kids eat anything.
If they get rid of these, they better bring back lawn darts.
Someone at work passed out these magnets a gift. They have so many brightly colored warnings to keep away for kids that it is ridiculous. Anyone who ignores these warnings is worse than stupid.
Anyone remember the bucky ball magnetic toys from a few years back?
These magnets are crazy strong. They can get you into trouble even without swallowing them. Reading the reviews on Amazon, it’s almost comical some of the mishaps people have with them.
The lawyers of Irwin Mainway, President of Mainway Toys Inc have already filed an injunction against this.
