This is probably the best graphic I found to show what happened. It is a stark reminder of how much we have improved health care in the last 70 years.

The death rates look high. The highest is about 8 per thousand per year.

The comparison is to the entire Canadian population.

The proper comparison would be to the communities the children came from.

Those death rates would be much, much higher than the Canadian average, because they would mostly be form small tribal villages in remote locations.
