The calm of a sunny May afternoon in Taiwan was broken by a crescendo of smartphones buzzing due to a national emergency alert.
Electricity blackouts were coming due to a malfunction at a power plant in the south of the island. People had no time to prepare. There were more than 30 reports of people being trapped in elevators half an hour after the warning in the capital city.
"I was talking to my clients... but our building suddenly blacked out. The air conditioning as well as WiFi crashed completely, so I went home early," a manager with the surname of Lin working in the Neihu Science Park in Taipei, where many top tech companies have offices, told Nikkei Asia. "Many traffic lights on my way home were out and my home was dark too."
"We could only use candles and have instant noodles for dinner, and there was no hot water for showers," a resident in the southern city of Tainan told Nikkei. "It's been like living in ancient times."
More than four million households on the island, which has a population of 24 million, were affected by six rounds of rolling one-hour power suspensions on May 13 before power was fully restored around 8 p.m.
After the two massive power outages, Taiwan endured another small-scale power suspension in Taipei City on Friday and experienced temporary power generator malfunctions at two separate coal-fired power plants on Sunday and Monday respectively.
Maintaining production is crucial at a time of global chip shortage, with political tensions and pandemic-induced lockdowns affecting supply chains and remote working increasing demand for electronic devices.

My TSMC stock took a hit.
We never locked down over covid. We had restrictions such as no large scale public events. Right now we are in a level 3alert. Schools are closed, restaurants are closed for dining in. If you go to a store, have to wear a mask, have temp taken before entering, and sign in that you were at that place at at that time ( for contact info if an infected person was at that place at the same time )
83% of CPUs and 70% of memory are made in Taiwan and South Korea.
How the h#ll did we let that happen?
To me that would be a lockdown. Not much open and face diapers required. Sign to enter? No thanks.
Everything is open ( except the sc tohools, doing online teaching ). No restrictions on travel. The only reason it is more strict this time is that the strain is the British variant which is more contagious. The worst one is the Brazilian. With Biden letting all these illegals into the country without testing and immediately sending them across the US, I’m afraid the US is going to hit with that in the next few months. You know what Biden will do then.
Don’t forget the India variant and the black, white, yellow fungus with it.

My mask had breathing holes in it.
Yes they are locked down. My wife is in Tainan. What a mess.
Just wait till china takes over Taiwan and see what happens to our chip supplies.
People must check in every business they enter with their phones so the government can trace any and all.
“ We never locked down over covid.”
_____________
Who/where is we?
Tainan is not that bad. Only a couple of cases there. Kaohsiung , however, has many cases. The mostvare I Taipei and New Taipei city ( where I am )
“ Taiwan hit by triple blow of drought, blackouts and COVID surge.”
_____________
Is it safe to say, without China’s acts of war there would only be a drought.
Taiwan. I live outside of Taipei. We had restrictions for large events but not lockdowns. Businesses and schools were open.
I am surprised that is the only thing they are catching in India. They are throwing infected dead bodies into the Ghanges.
If I don’t wear a mask and don’t sign in, would I be arrested?
Fined for not wearing a mask. As far as signing in. You have 2 options. Phone app or sign in sheet where you leave name and number. People who don’t want the gov to know where they are going just sign in with a fake name and number.
As an aside,in one of the initial cases that spread the virus through the country, they couldn’t determine where he got it. They went through all the info he provided and nothing matched up to where it spread. They finally found out that he left something out. He visited a “massage” parlor. He didn’t want his wife to find out.
