A bill expected to soon be signed into law by Gov. Greg Abbott will allow police to charge protesters with a felony if they are accused of obstructing emergency vehicles when blocking the street.
House Bill 9, which passed in both bodies of the Texas Legislature on Monday, would make blocking an emergency vehicle a state-jail felony punishable by up to two years in jail. It also requires anyone who receives probation for blocking a roadway to serve at least 10 days in jail.
...Abbott tweeted his support for the bill Saturday.
"Peaceful protest doesn’t include blocking roadways and preventing emergency vehicle access," Abbott said. "That chaos won’t be tolerated in Texas."
...There's been no instance where marchers have blocked an ambulance or fire truck in Houston, according to Fire Chief Samuel Peña. A search (and callout) for any case in Texas similarly came up short...
...Current law states no one "without legal privilege or authority" can block a highway, street or sidewalk (among other places) used by the public or a substantial group of people. The charge is a Class B misdemeanor.
The bill keeps that in place and adds the felony-level provision for obstructing emergency vehicles.

I seem to recall incidents where people in their OWN vehicles bringing family members to emergency rooms encounted mobs of people blocking highways and attacking vehicles that persisted in trying to get through to reach said emergency care.
I would consider moving there, but, to dam hot.

Local family’s emergency trip to hospital interrupted by demonstrators
The coordinator of the protest says he gave specific instructions to participants not to break any laws and not to touch or harm anyone
...Georgia was on her way to Texas Children’s Hospital in the Medical Center because her 7-year-old granddaughter was having an allergic reaction to some medication.
Georgia’s daughter was driving and tried to go around the demonstrators by driving on the grassy shoulder.
“One of them was hitting the windshield and I was just screaming, ‘We’ve got to get to the hospital,’ and they were screaming and chanting,” she said. “All I could think of was, I got to get my granddaughter to the hospital.”
There is barbecue and tex-mex food...
I heard Austin has become a Democrat Tent City
Keep Austin Insane
Just build a ‘Protest Stadium’ ....let people march around a track, have a press box and air time so any interested can tune in. Police security so when any thing happens remove them like they do at other venues. Get them off the streets and everybody will be happier.
When i got up to go to work this morning, in Grand Haven, Mi, it was 63 and a down poor rain. I like cool and green, and we have texmex also.
What about the cars and trucks we all drive everyday? The proposed law is ridiculous in that it only applies to emergency vehicles.
The PDs and FDs better dispatch emergency vehicles with lights and sirens as soon as the bastards try a roadway shutdown. Then they can nab them on felony charges.
What it should mean is that scumbags can no longer impose their will on ordinary citizens but I doubt the Houston city government and politicized law enforcement management will all the police to do their job.l
Only West Texas is desert and that’s 12 hours drive away.
Same as always the DAs here will drop any charges and the current Soros DA will even purge the arrest files so that they won’t have problems applying for jobs.
I was lucky enough to pull into Galvestan in the 1970’s with the Navy. A lot of fun, to hot for this michigan boy.
Perfect. Also, days there are no protests planned we can house border jumping families until a return trip to their home is achieved.
Exactly, they’ve started to move the protests and riots out of their neighborhoods into other peoples communities.
Which makes the whole thing pre-arranged and not something “spontaneous” which “merely got out of hand” (shades of Hillary Clinton’s 9-11-2012 excuse which she knew was a lie).
Austin has been a shithole for years.
Street Protests attract rioters as we know...they slither out of their dark holes at just the scent of a protest. Then there’s ‘other’ protesters that piggyback these.
