Baby Bust
The American Mind ^ | 5/21/21 | Rebeccah L. Heinrichs

Despite some hope that the pandemic might bring the country a baby boom, we had a bust. Total fertility in 2020 was the lowest rate on record since the government began tracking it in the 1930s, and total births were the lowest since 1979, well below the replacement rate of 2.1 births per woman. Economic and health concerns weighed on the minds of those who chose not to have a child this past year. But the plummeting numbers fit with a multi-year trend: American women are simply having fewer children and are waiting much longer to marry than women just a generation ago.

As an increasingly typical 29-year-old woman told the New York Times, she’s putting off children because she’s “getting to live her life.” She’s “feeling a little bit selfish,” and “everybody in my friend group is saying, ‘When is the right time to let go of that selfishness?’” On Mother’s Day, the New York Times even chose to glamorize women who reject motherhood altogether, and feminist Jill Filipovic wrote that she would like to read more essays from women who regret having had children. Let there be no mistake about the cultural elite’s denigration of motherhood and children.

I think the simpler explanation is people are rational and they want to provide a good life for their children. The sense I get is that the economy is going to crater and it’s going to be hard to give a kid a decent life. Also, who would have a kid when it appears the government is intent on turning that kid into someone who reports you for incorrect thinking or who wants to mutilate his body?

I don’t have any sense that the country is running in the right direction. I did have that sense under Trump. I wonder what the fertility rate was then?

i have 2 daughters and no grandchildren.
They both work, full time +, one is not married and won’t do the single mom routine.
My son in law is a large child, and she has enough on her plate with full time work and hubbbys issues.
She does not need a baby!!

It is possible to make life so miserable for the young they don’t want to reproduce.

How much of our birth rate decline was due to a reduction in ‘birth tourism’ which was curtailed in the past year due to travel restrictions?

1. Make it a crime to farm with anything more sophisticated than a steel plow dragged by oxen.

2. Close the border and deport all illegal aliens.

Then people will start having kids again. ;-)

That’s a very interesting question. Especially since the Chinese moms were the first to be cut off.

I’d be interested in to see if birth rates are lower in high property tax states....

Wait until the sterility portions of the vaccine kick in.

Don’t believe this bs. In the last year in the hospital I work in dozens of my young female co-workers and young female RN’s have left to go on maternity leave. Dozens.

And lot’s more are walking around with a ‘’baby bump’’.

Most definitely - a lot of people say they can only have 1 or 2 kids because of the cost of living

Wait until the sterility portions of the vaccine kick in.

You will be waiting a long time for that. A long, long time. A very long time.

A vaccine tells your body to develop antibodies against a pathogen. This is a completely natural process. Have you ever in your life known or heard of anyone who became sterile as a result of becoming immune to a disease?

Some of this anti-vax nonsense is so distant from reality, I wonder how any thinking person could fall for it. Yet people go out of their way to believe anything anti-vax, no matter how ludicrous and non-scientific it is. Whatever happened to critical thought?

In Indonesia the authorities were so intent on squelching any possibility if a baby boom that they sent government vehicles equipped with loudspeakers that broadcast a message telling people to not get pregnant.

Maybe our authoritarians are just sneakier so we had the unhinged summer of woke crazies to convince people that this was not a world into which anyone should bring babies.

You would think that since men are having babies now the birth rate would be rising.

Indonesia, the world’s fourth-largest country in terms of population size, is expected to grow from a population of 276 million to 311 million by 2045. This projection is based on data from Statistics Indonesia's (BPS) 2018 report, ‘Indonesia Population Projections 2015-2045’.

Want fewer kids? Institute Social Security for the elderly - greedy humans will have fewer children knowing the government will take care of them when they're old.
