Actually, there was quite some debate, IIRC, 20 years ago about whether it was ethical to eradicate the small pox virus. At the time, there were only three repositories of the virus. These were the sole remaining small pox virus population. When it was suggested that these populations be eradicated, many protested that this was genocide and should be strictly forbidden.
