there is no such thing as an “illegal gun”.....yes, a convicted felon in possession of a firearm has done so illegally, but the gun itself is not “illegal”.....let’s say I own a cherished Beretta 92FS which in and of itself is not illegal...but it gets stolen and the person who stole it now has it “illegally”....there is a big distiction here....

He was in possession of a "semi-automatic gun with a magazine that held 22 rounds" so, in NJ - the gun itself is illegal to possess.
