Russian President Putin vowed to 'knock the teeth out' of nations who grab pieces of the state's vast territory
Secretary of State Blinken warned Moscow the North Pole must remain 'free of conflict' at Thursday's summit
His Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov hit back, saying the Kremlim saw 'no grounds' for conflict in the Arctic, but warned the West about militarising on Russia's doorstep and said the country would defend itself
Comes as Russia revealed a massive polar military airbase, Nagurskoye, in the Franz Josef Land archipelago It has been heavily militarised with missiles, a radar system and a runway handling nuclear bombers
It comes amid increasing tensions in the Arctic with global competition for the oil and gas rich area

GON was a good movie. The book is a page turner. I love Maclean’s writing style.

Putin could send troops to occupy and claim Alaska and there’s absolutely nothing Biden would do about it.

I’ve seen it multiple times. Great movie. Nobody had ever seen on film a sub bust through the ice.

Passive-aggressive foreign policy always leads to enemy aggression and often to war.
Hmm...
- Civil War (Buchanan)
- WWI (Wilson)
- Korea (Truman)
- Vietnam (Johnson)
- Iraq/ 9-11 (Clinton)
- Mideast meltdown (Obama)

Even based on Chinese speed building, it's hard to believe this was built in less than 4 years. So where was our intel agency when first ground was broken? (and don't tell me we don't have surveillance of the NP because we do, both satellite and radar recon)

The Russian military is not the monolith people might think it is.
Russia is a dying country. It's birthrate is declining, alcoholism is rampant and young Russian women are desperate to marry a Westerner and get out.

The Nagurskoye airbase in the Franz Josef Land archipelago was built in the 1950s as a weather station and communications outpost between the Eurasian mainland and the North Pole.... Now, Russia's northernmost military base is bristling with activity and its extended runway can handle all types of aircraft, including nuclear-capable strategic bombers. The site projects Moscow's power and influence across the Arctic amid intensifying international competition for the region's vast resources.

Looks like the island is almost the halfway point between Russia and Greenland [that bigger island Trump offered to buy.]

Russia has sought to assert its influence over wide areas of the Arctic in competition with the United States, Canada, Denmark and Norway as shrinking polar ice from the warming planet offers new opportunities for resources and shipping routes. China also has shown an increasing interest in the region, believed to hold up to one-fourth of the Earth's undiscovered oil and gas.

Not really... in order to monopolize the sales of oil and gas to Germany, or to best influence the price of such energy, and thus exert the most control over a dependent western Europe, Russia wants to control the sea routes other countries will need to use to access expected discoveries throughout that region of the Arctic.
A base in the similar trefoil shape and patriotic colours to the one in Nagurskoye is on Kotelny Island, between the Laptev Sea and the East Siberian Sea on eastern end of the shipping route, also with missiles and radar.

It is kind of funny Putin’s complaining about “Oslo militarizing the Arctic” because a US nuclear sub visited a port in Norway, while Russia’s been installing antiship missiles, extending runways to accomodate bombers, holding show of force exercises, etc., the whole time.

thanks, but there’s a reason we’ve had a NATO base in Keflavik for 60 years, not to mention our stations on Greenland; early warning of bases where they’re not supposed to be is one of those big reasons. Greenland is now in play and they may be calling on the US sooner than they thought.
but I have a better understanding now of why Zero and his party made such a big smokescreen of ‘russia, russia, russia’ to bury what was really going on. (made even clearer by Biteme bending over backwards to give Russia pipelines into Germany, a nefarious move on all their parts, giving Russia power over Germany and Germany power over the EU). Makes one wonder if the reports of an ice-bound polar sea the last few years were also a smokescreen?
