To be fair, Ukraine screwed themselves over by constantly stealing gas as it passed through the pipelines passing through their territory (even though they were being paid transit fees), and refusing to pay for the gas they had contracted for. Signed agreements existed, and they refused to abide by them. I have no sympathy for them whatsoever.

What is Russia supposed to do, keep sending their goods along a road where they know for a fact a certain percentage is being stolen?

Honestly, I don't get why people care about this. Russia and Europe are doing voluntary business with each other. Why in God's name is the USA involved in dictating terms between two independent sovereigns? It is patently absurd. Russia has the right to sell their gas, and Europe has the right to buy it.

This is an example of Biden accidentally getting something 100% right (maybe he requires payola to actually do stuff right!).
