DarkSide, the hacker group behind the Colonial ransomware attack, received $90 million in bitcoin ransom payments, according to blockchain sleuths Elliptic. The cybercriminal gang shut down last week after losing access to its servers and as its cryptocurrency wallets were emptied. Elliptic said DarkSide's bitcoin wallet contained $5.3 million worth of the digital currency before its funds were drained.

One of my favorite stories is the one of how middle east terror group started kidnapping Soviets in that part of the world. The Soviets took relatives of the terrorists and started chopping off body parts, sending them, with a nice little note telling them more were on the way. Hostages released asap and it never happened again.
A couple of questions.
Do you think the hackers are criminals?
Why do criminals operate outside of the US?
Why outside of countries that do not cooperate with the US?
Who do you think is stupid enouigh to send money to the IRS showing that they got it by hacking a US company named Colonial that is part of the US defense?
Will the criminal who shot Seth Rich report his payment to the IRS?
Is everything reportable reported?
The code used by the ransomware hackers apparently has code built in to it to avoid installing itself on machines that are likely to be in Russia or some related countries, including Syria. Apparently the hackers really want to avoid ending up dead or in jail.
Some people install the Russian keyboard option, or make registry changes so that their machines appear to be in Russia as a defense against the malware.
If our government was doing what it should be doing hackers and call center fraud operators worldwide should be avoiding Americans, not concentrating on us.
I am confused. Is the link saying Colonial paid 90 million to Darkside instead of the 5 million reported?
