Geneva (AFP) - Working more than 55 hours a week increases the risk of death from heart disease and stroke, according to a United Nations study out Monday.
The report by the UN's World Health Organization and International Labor Organization agencies comes as the Covid-19 pandemic accelerates workplace changes that could reinforce the tendency to work longer hours.
"Working 55 hours or more per week is a serious health hazard," said Maria Neira, director of the WHO's environment, climate change and health department.
"It's time that we all -- governments, employers, and employees -- wake up to the fact that long working hours can lead to premature death."
The study concluded that working 55 hours or more per week was associated with an estimated 35-percent increase in the risk of suffering a stroke, and a 17-percent rise in the risk of dying from ischemic heart disease, compared to working 35 to 40 hours.
"No job is worth the risk of stroke or heart disease. Governments, employers and workers need to work together to agree on limits to protect the health of workers."

This is rich coming from people who don’t do any.
And, yet, the UN constantly advocates higher taxes... which makes people work longer hours to pay.
No chance of me working more than 50 hours per week...
And make it harder for biz to hire more people.
More “keep them in fear” journalism.

No problem. You can take two of the part-time menial labor jobs that all the fast-food and restaurant jobs offer. You too can earn $600 a week, working 55 hours a week. That should shrink the pool of 8.1 menial labor unskilled labor jobs no one wants.
I think the opposite, not working, is much worse.
Yes, you can push yourself too hard. You need to pay attention to what your body is telling you and not go too hard, but the very best thing for you is to push the envelope right up to where you are about to go too far.
On a side note, none of the guys I know that retired and played golf, fished, traveled, or volunteered as their primary function in life ever seemed truly happy to me, and they seemed to age more quickly.
I will work until I am physically unable to do so. Being productive is substantial to our nature and purpose.
Then I should be dead

I’ve noticed a couple of employees in a nearby convenience store also work in a Dollar General in the same strip mall.
People were warned that the Obamacare requirement forcing employers to provide insurance to workers with 30 or more hours per week was going to lead to 1) elimination of many full-time jobs, and 2) many people being forced to work two 29-jour per week jobs (58 hours per week). Both of these scenarios have played out...
I agree with you in terms of working as long as I can, though I’d probably opt for a less stressful job/easier schedule. Unfortunately, employers often have other ideas.
The more I deal with younger people, the more secure I feel in my job.
I’ve been working 50-55 hour weeks for decades...I am screwed. I guess I don’t get to live for eternity here on this earth like Lefties think they will.

The local Jack and the Box has jobs posted for $15 an hour for about 25 hours a week. I am considering retiring from stressful job and get paid $15 an hour to flip burgers until I turn 59 1/2. I already have my pensions in place.
Just think no deadlines, all I must do is make a good tasting burger and keep a store clean.
If you love your job, you do not even notice 55 hours at work.

Now you know someone who has been very happily retired for 22 years. Retired at 54 and due to be 76 next month.
So, if they weren’t working they would be at home stuffing their faces with processed foods while playing video games and gaining lots of extra poundage, probably. That’s real healthy.
Lol...I once went on overtime on a tuesday afternoon

4 years short of being an Octogenarian, but a solid Contrarian for 72 years and running.
How does not working and living under a bridge with an inadequate food supply effect life expectancy?
