US Scholar Who Consulted Reagan On Russia Asks Putin For Russian Citizenship

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 16th May, 2021) Former US President Ronald Reagan's adviser on Russia, Suzanne Massie, has traveled to Moscow to ask Russian President Vladimir Putin for a Russian passport.

The 90-year-old is considered one of the most significant figures in the late Cold War period of US-Soviet relations.

"I devoted many years of my life to bringing the peoples of the United States and Russia closer to one another. It is utterly important and necessary for me today to stay in Russia in order to continue my cause. If President Vladimir Vladimirovich [Putin] finds it possible to grant me Russian citizenship, it will be an honor for me," Massie said in an interview with Russian broadcaster NTV.

She believes that the current US administration has no interest in and intention of trying to mend ties because they need Russia to serve as an "external enemy" figure.

Vocally critical of US President Joe Biden, Massie accused his administration of keeping own citizens in the dark and allowing major US media to manipulate information.

"I know that they will say that I am a traitor," she said.

The Reagan adviser is fluent in Russian and has written several books on Russian history and culture, as well as on her experiences as an official with the White House and Department of State. She traveled to Moscow without notifying the US authorities to participate in the annual Victory Parade at Red Square on May 9.

Nice to have the luxury to do such a thing.

What the hell does this mean? Do we now live in a Communist dictatorship where citizens are required to notify the government when they go to other countries? It’s almost like they are trying to false equate Russia with places like NK that require “permission” to visit.

I wondered that also. If she was the grand marshal of the parade and riding on a glitter encrusted T-72... she supposed to notify the US government first?

If she still has a clearance and wanted to keep it, she would have to report the travel. But as she’s 90, she probably does not GAF.

Her late ex-husband Robert Massie wrote: “Dreadnought,” “Castle of Steel,” and “Nicholas and Alexandra.”

I also believe she introduced to the USA and President Reagan, the statement “Trust but Verify.”

She has lived in Blue Hill, Maine about 30 minutes from my home. Several of my friends tell me she is the real deal.

Suzanne Massie introduced President Reagan to the expression “Trust but Verify.”

She has lived in Blue Hill, Maine for some years-about thirty minutes from my home. Several of my friends whose grandparents came to the USA from the USSR have told me she is the real deal and liked working with President Reagan.

My father worked for DoD for 20 years, and had to report all his travels out of country. Price of a clearance.

The oppressive atmosphere that smothered the USSR has cleared up. Skies are bright and blue. Not so in America. Quite the opposite.

One of my son’s friends learned Russian and moved to Russia got a job and is now married. He had no luxury, just that he wanted to do it and made it happen.

I had a top secret clearance with the Navy Security Group when I was discharged in Sep 1967.

There were only two basic no go’s:

1. Any Communist country at any time.
2. I could not join the Peace Corp.

I traveled to Jamaica several times, Bermuda, Mexico several times, Canada several times, the UK, and France.

I used a US passport on all foreign travel.

There never was a problem before or after any of those out of country trips.

The oppressive atmosphere that smothered the USSR has cleared up. Skies are bright and blue. Not so in America. Quite the opposite.

I remember in 1983 just after the Soviets shot down KAL-007 in American History class, I asked, "what if in the future, the US became the USSR and the USSR became the US?" I always had the consensus then that if the USSR did not make some changes, the Communist system they had would mot likely not last past 2020. Well in the latter, I was right, but my timing was way off. The former, well, Russia still has some ways to go to equal the freedoms of 1983 US but still in many ways now, they are freer than we are. I was 17 years old ad a junior in high school. You could have heard a pin drop in class. I told my German teacher, who took the class over in 1979 that included trips to East Germany and he said if we are not careful, we could lose our freedoms here. I don't know it popped in my head I just tossed it out for craps and giggles although I did have a sense of foreboding thinking, what if it happened. It's like something opened up and I saw something through a crack into the future. When the 1990's came, my German teacher was optimistic like all of us. I think he would have changed a few years later had he not passed in 1993. I think in the 1990's we lost opportunities to engage Russia to get her closer to our side, instead when Kosovo happened, we started to alienate Russia and we are paying for it now as well as in the last 20 years or so. We are paying the price for that as well as for our complacency after the Cold War. This is one time I hate being correct.
