Last week Governor Newsom and the Legislature announced an agreement on the proposed Golden State Stimulus, which will provide one-time stimulus payments of $600 to low-income Californians.

Instead, they are ‘ eligible’ for a $ 600 California Golden Grant,
as long as they file a California state tax return,
which they can’t even if the wanted to
cuz California will only let them file if they had taxable income.

One would think after all these government checks, the recipients would be well above poverty level by now.
While such stimulus efforts are meant to benefit families that have been hit hard by the pandemic, a report released in early April showed it wasn’t reaching those most in need.

Why? In order to send payments quickly, the federal and state governments used previous years’ tax filings as indicators for need. But that overlooked folks who weren’t required to file taxes at all because they had little to no income and didn’t owe money to the IRS.
One would think the important point is not the money
But the Governor’s deception of legal California residents whose only income is SSA waiting for something that will never come
while at same time
giving it to every criminal who successfully broke immigration law.

put simply, they figure why should they work at all when they can live twice as high on the hog just scarfing up all the free give-aways, welfare, and “public benefits” of about 25 different kinds
and yes, they are not stupid, nor irrational. what they figure makes perfectly good sense for them. they are only acting in their own best interests. pay people to not work and you won’t see them working. it is very logical

You numbers are incorrect. Not in California, but the EDD benefits calculator says this:
Actually $1800 a month maximum. Plus the $1200 per month extra until September. You needed to make $4000 per month in earnings to get that maximum $450/ week benefit.

the calculators do not include the many local and charitable benefits available including entire orders of free groceries, free hot meals, free gasoline vouchers, free clothing, free furniture, free household appliances, and undoubtably many more readily-available freebies
plus the free health care and medical treatment
free (waived fees) college (at least for 2 years) with free books
and free automobiles if the “client” doesn’t have one, etc and etc
many of the free items are quickly and easily sold on the streets for money, booze, drugs, too

your numbers are straight up BS, I was on UE last year and never received 4 to 5k a month
we forgot to even include UE in our quick listing
if you are ever in that situation again and you check around for what other folks are collecting, federal programs, state programs, local in some cases, private charities of all kinds, unemployment as you mentioned, etc...
you’ll see. and almost all non-taxable and/or off the books, too, so that only compounds the value over working for wages

At least check out the free grocery places. At some You can haul easily over $200 in good grub of your choice fir free each visit. No ID required either. Tax free Check around. A number of public colleges run these because they have big available parking lots and room both indoors and outdoors to set up the grocery tables. You select what you want just like at Safeway. Just no cashier on the way out
