NIH head accuses Rand Paul of ‘misinformation’ about US ties to Wuhan lab

National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Dr. Francis Collins accused Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) Friday of spreading “misinformation” about the use of federal grant money by the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China.

Earlier this week, Paul accused the NIH and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) of funding so-called “gain of function” research into bat coronaviruses through grants. Gain of function research refers to the process of studying viruses by making them more virulent and transmissible in people.

“It’s really unfortunate that a lot of misinformation is being spread around here,” Collins insisted on Fox News’ “Special Report”.

Let me be very clear, we never approved any grant that would have supported gain of function research on dangerous coronaviruses to see if they could be more transmissible or lethal for individuals in the human species,” he added. “That was not something that we would have done … we never approved that kind of research and that’s something Sen. Paul might want to be a bit more clear about.”

Collins added that it was “appropriate” for the NIH to fund Chinese research into bat coronaviruses in the wake of the SARS and MERS epidemics, but acknowledged that the agency “can’t absolutely prevent somebody who has an intention of deceiving us about how they use the funds.”

Funds are fungible. Funds granted from the US were used to all kinds of research. We should not grant any funds to Red China.

I think he’s accurate. Very circumspect, yes.

NIH funded the lab to find and characterize these types of viruses after SARS.

What I’ve found astonishing is that it was USAID that funded the lab to a huge extent.

NIH provided nothing compared to USAID.

Which is weird that USAID is funding a lab like that.

It reeks of shenanigans.

Is this guy serious?

If you don't fund the Chicoms and their subsidiaries then you CAN prevent them from deceiving us about them using our funds..

Whole bunch of weasel words there. I’m sure they did some layers of laundering of the money, but at the end of the day I have little doubt that the US paid to develop Covid-19 in China. The cover-up is so they can continue their gain of function without any new rules to follow.

They said it was misinformation. I guess that settles it.

I’ll try that when I’m in court fighting a ticket.

As an anti vaxxer I have a 3 inch stack of documentation and studies from major pharma players supporting my argument.

My opponents have nothing.

I’m told I’m misinformed.

If I knew this in my school debate clubs, which I attended and competed undefeated, I could have saved so much time.

” “Let me be very clear, we never approved any grant that would have supported gain of function research on dangerous coronaviruses to see if they could be more transmissible or lethal for individuals in the human species,” he added. “

That key statement contains at least four qualifiers: “on dangerous coronaviruses”; “more transmissible”; “lethal”; “for individuals in the human species”. That’s like John Wilkes Booth saying he wasn’t in the Ford Theater wearing a brown suit with custom spats and a gold pinkie ring. The Clintons were masters at adding qualifiers to distract from a central truth.

The key question is why was the NIH funding research by the Chinese on techniques for increasing the functions accessible to any corona virus, especially given the ties between the Wuhan lab and ChiCom bioweapons program?

You may be right. I think one way he’s accurate, sort of, is the gain of function research was being done to infect mice whose respiratory system, apparently, is similar to humans.

Dr. Francis Collins is a brilliant man who was a powerful Christian voice in the scientific community for decades but it sure seems like he has gotten very off-track in the last few years...not sure if he is being misled or if he has, perhaps, gotten pulled into a deceptive Gospel that elevates humanism and naturalism above God. Certainly, spending much time with Tony Fauci could warp someone’s mindset pretty quickly, I would imagine!

Rand Paul is correct that Dr. Anthony Fauci was in control of NIH when they forwarded monies to Wuhan Lab for gain of function research. To say otherwise is a lie! All evidence points this way.

Funds are fungible.

Correct. From articles and video clips I have seen it would seem that the funding was "laundered" through some NGO and then that NGO sent the funds to the Wuhan Lab.

These ‘gods’ of science will never accept responsibility for any of their acts .. There is always a plausible variant or breakthrough they never saw happening. But talk about high self esteem and tyrannical control freaks when it suits their bank accounts.

From the article:

Therefore, we synthesized the SHC014 spike in the context of the replication-competent, mouse-adapted SARS-CoV backbone (we hereafter refer to the chimeric CoV as SHC014-MA15) to maximize the opportunity for pathogenesis and vaccine studies in mice....

To test the ability of the SHC014 spike to mediate infection of the human airway, we examined the sensitivity of the human epithelial airway cell line Calu-3 2B4 (ref. 9) to infection and found robust SHC014-MA15 replication, comparable to that of SARS-CoV Urbani (Fig. 1c). To extend these findings, primary human airway epithelial (HAE) cultures were infected and showed robust replication of both viruses (Fig. 1d). Together, the data confirm the ability of viruses with the SHC014 spike to infect human airway cells and underscore the potential threat of cross-species transmission of SHC014-CoV.
