Democrats refuse to prioritize REAL infrastructure — like Colonial Pipeline
NY Post ^ | 13 May 2021 | Glenn Reynolds

Child care is infrastructure, according to Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Health-care aides for seniors are infrastructure, say Democratic activists. “Anti-racism” is infrastructure, we’re told. But these things aren’t infrastructure; they’re just things Democrats want funded with taxpayer money.

You know what’s actually infrastructure? Bridges and pipelines. On that front, we’re not doing so well.

The shutdown of the Colonial Pipeline this week demonstrated that our actual infrastructure is vulnerable and that our lives can be disrupted quickly when it fails. Hackers, undeterred by the FBI and Homeland Security officials who are supposed to be protecting critical infrastructure, managed to lock down the pipeline controls with ransomware. Fuel deliveries stopped, gas lines formed (shades of the Jimmy Carter era), and prices went up, all within a couple of days.

Fresh from blocking construction of another major pipeline (the Keystone XL), the Biden administration flailed, while a nation that just a year or so ago became a net oil exporter found itself facing fuel shortages. That’s infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the Interstate 40 bridge across the Mississippi River also failed this week. The Hernando de Soto span connecting Memphis to Arkansas on one of America’s most important interstate highways is closed until further notice after dangerous cracks were found. Now all traffic is being routed onto the single alternative bridge while officials play catch-up on maintenance. That’s infrastructure.

According to the liberals, everything is infrastructure. Black Lives Matter is probably considered infrastructure according to certain definitions.

Let’s not forget about protecting the electrical grid. Not one penny in the “infrastructure” bill for that.

I read that the pipeline was shut because the petroleum products couldn’t be billed for in the usual manner.

I guess one can’t trust a big gasoline company to pay for the gasoline that gets pumped into a storage tank via the pipeline.

When I was born in 1958, I’m not even sure Niagara-Mohawk (the power company for the area of New York State where I grew up) owned a computer.

Computers became popular in the 1960’s. I remember checking the price of IBM stock after my father bought his weekly copy of Barron’s.

It isn't just protection from computers. It is physical protection of the transformers themselves. There are critical transformers to the power grid whose only protection is a chain link fence. These should be protected by a reinforced concrete shell surrounding it. As things stand now, they can be destroyed by a high caliber round from a rifle. These transformers are only made in Germany and take up to 3 years to construct. The US is out of luck if these are taken out.

As an aside, I live in Taiwan. Yesterday, my phone went off with a Presidential Alert message ( it was in Chinese so I didn't know what it said ). Two seconds later, all the power went out. My first though was the Chinese were invading, but I didn't hear any air raid sirens. So I tuned into the English radio station ( ICRT ) to see what was going on. When I tuned in they were playin a song - The Final Countdown :-) Turns out 2 of the 4 generators at a station went out ( blamed it on a computer problem ). 6 million were without power from 3 PM to 9PM ( the had rolling blackouts - power for an hour, power off for an hour )

A WH spokesperson said, paraphrasing, “Colonial is a private business so it is their decision whether or not to pay the hackers the ransom.”

Apparently the WH doesn’t consider a hacker group in Russia a national security issue in any way. They also must believe that Putin is entirely faultless and helpless to do anything about it.

They call every liberal fantasy “infrastructure” because without the present crisis it would never get passed and get funds allocated to it.

The “General Welfare” clause in the Constitution is the liberal take down of everything.

The absolute incompetence of Colonial Pipeline has convinced me NOBODY should move to any of the states affected by this gasoline delivery disruption.

Don’t move there. Don’t buy a house there. Those states are completely vulnerable to total transportation shutdowns.

In short order, food would not be available in those states because of the transportation shutdown.

I will not consider moving there now that I know complete idiots are in charge of fuel distributions into those states.

Who allows this to happen who is in charge of a major pipeline company?
