When the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released new guidelines last month for mask wearing, it announced that “less than 10 percent” of Covid-19 transmission was occurring outdoors. Media organizations repeated the statistic, and it quickly became a standard description of the frequency of outdoor transmission.
But the number is almost certainly misleading.
It appears to be based partly on a misclassification of some Covid transmission that actually took place in enclosed spaces (as I explain below). An even bigger issue is the extreme caution of C.D.C. officials, who picked a benchmark — 10 percent — so high that nobody could reasonably dispute it.
That benchmark “seems to be a huge exaggeration,” as Dr. Muge Cevik, a virologist at the University of St. Andrews, said.

Can we get CDC to admit that the actual outdoor rate is “below 1 percent and may be below 0.1 percent”? Seems realistic since places dropping masks have seen drop in infections and there were apparently no uptick from Spring Break. CDC should admit outdoors is safe, save the masks as optional for confined indoor areas where you are in very close proximity to others. Better to say No to outdoors, Optional or even not recommended for Indoors. We see the reports of lowered transmission in places that end mask mandates. CDC has to eventually catch up with this reality.
CDC really does what it wants. I said it before about Democrat governors, and it’s the same for CDC, they have never had this much power before and they aren’t going to give it up that easily.
The most surprising element here is the NYT reported this.
Need a vaccine for CDC misinformation.
Masks are disease spreading cesspools unless they are worn under sterile conditions in an operating room.
Nice for the NYT to publish this some 15 months into all the garbage. Many, many people remained scared crapless and mask up outside. I see them literally everyday. Their fear will not be easily undone.
So the reality is being outdoors there was less than a 1 percent chance and possibly as low as a 0.1 percent chance of infection. So naturally, everyone was then mandated to be locked indoors. Makes perfect sense.
I’m beginning to suspect that if covid hadn’t been hyped up as anything other than a bad flu, the total number of deaths from Covid would have been lower and we would not have the variant strains.
CDC is a “non-profit” quasi FedGov agency that is totally politicized and influenced by the pharmaceutical industry. The vaccine industry is worth $30 Billion a year. The CDC gets their cut and also throws money out to their pay to play lobbyists, medical groups, scientists, doctors, influencers, politicians etc. etc. The left hated it under Trump and now love it under Biden. Feel better about that “jab”?
Didn’t we learn a couple of weeks ago that Bill Gates is a big sponsor of the CDC?
why should anyone trust anything that the cdc says about stopping the spread of a so called “deadly virus” when they’re complicit in our feral government opening the border, inviting, and continuing to distribute thousands of “disease carrying invaders” across our country during a so called “global pandemic”???...
I’m betting that the unmasked INDOOR chances are actually far below that 0.1%
I remember seeing posts on Facebook from the local community forms last March and April of Karen’s who did there once a week grocery shopping snapping pictures and being terrified that people dare go out and take a walk or exercise instead of sit on the couch all day. Any sane person knew that it was healthier to be outside getting fresh air, but these idiots stay glued to CNN for months on end being terrified of everything.
These are the same people who thought bringing groceries into their house would give them COVID and left them in the garage for like a week to let the virus die off, changed clothes in the garage before going back inside like it’s some hazmat situation, etc.
I was just going to say the same thing. If the wrong buy this much outside, I’m willing to bet the actual number or indoor spread is likely less than 1% also.
If indoor spread was so prevalent, why do we not see cases in restaurants where everyone takes off their masks the second they are seated and are opening their mouth to chew, talk, etc. And in no way shape or form remotely close to being 6 feet apart from their friends at the same table.
The other day I went out to get the mail while a couple was walking down the sidewalk, about 80 feet away. By the time I grabbed the mail and headed back to the house I would have been about 30 feet from them. Instead, they decided to cross the street.
