California’s 6 million public school students have been “distance learning” from home since California Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered statewide business and school closures in March 2020 – more than 430 days ago.
A group of parents have started a petition to rid California of the California Teachers Association (CTA), the largest statewide teachers labor union. Across the state, parents and students have held protests and rallies against teachers unions and public school districts for not reopening.
A coalition of students, parents, and school leaders even filed a lawsuit last year to stop the CTA-backed effort to defund public charter school students in California – while schools were closed and children stuck at home learning on a computer during Zoom sessions.

When teacher unions fail to provide sufficient qualified teachers they have broken their contract with the school board. The school board should then hire non-union teachers.
“‘The teachers unions have been holding us all hostage, refusing to teach our children’”
Only took the parents until 2020 to figure it out...but at least they did. It’s my understanding that many here are still working on it...or else they wouldn’t be sending their kids to public school. Hopefully they eventually figure out the same...
“The school board should then hire non-union teachers.”
Improves the teacher IQ and teacher morality by quantum levels.
A win win for both students and parents.
As for the union, they can shove their idiocy up their collective Commieholes.
Well, they do have freedom of association so if they want to join a union they can. But the citizens of the state don’t have to allow collective bargaining for public servants.
You must be a novice at this. ;-)
When the teachers unions fail to hire qualified teachers and the students fail to pass simple standardized tests, they just lower the bar. Problem solved.
Proficiency for student now just means you can perform as well as a student two years your junior. Proficiency for teachers just means you can work a phone bank for your local hack politician.
U folks R missing sumtin’. it has to do with the recall Timing is everything. I keep having to say Use your head!”.
Fair enough. Maybe an issue to motivate voters but as far as any legislation goes I think it is too late to get anything about this onto the recall ballot.
In California, as in many other places, there are parents with sufficient means to ensure their children did not fall behind during the forced closure of in person learning. This was done by creating pods of children whose parents could hire teachers to supervise the remote learning process. Most of those children will weather the pandemic without too much of a problem. The children who have lost the most, and who will never catch up are the poor, wherever they may live. Their parents did not have the ability to hire someone to monitor their children as they “participated” in remote learning and this failure will be long lasting. The gaps that have been opened between these children and those whose parents who had the financial means to help their children learn will never be closed and will only widen over the years. In my opinion, the Teachers Unions, who claim to care about these children but really don’t, are to blame.
Thanks for that good reply, monkeydoodle!I enjoy FR and feel from all I have learned I should be awarded another degree of some sort. Thanks again
There is no reason for teachers to be in a union. Since Fedgov money goes to districts, they are essentially unionized government employees controlled by the national education association which is just plain corrupt Socialist /Marxist and Communist.
defund the schools
What if the school boards just as corrupt? They seem to be a problem as well..
USC - Unions of Socialist Collectives
Indeed. My very good friend for over 30 years has two young children. They graciously invited about a dozen other kids to come to their yard, which includes a covered side patio and a lot of grass to run around, all enclosed by gates of course. The kids are doing fine. They set up a dozen or so of those little kid desk/chair combos, a couple of white boards, opened up a wifi channel so kids can bring their tablets and laptops, and a couple of parents are there every day, too. There is a swing set and jungle gym there too. The kids learn. They socialize. They get play time. They get a good lunch.
Those kids are lucky. Or I guess the word is “privileged” these days. Of course there was nothing stopping everyone else from doing the same.
The private schools for kids that age have largely re-opened now, so it’s just about the end of that experiment/experience. They are young enough and resilient so in time it will be like this never happened. But what it will have done for their minds and spirit is incalculable. And what our government did to all the other children who didn’t have the means (or parents who didn’t have the inclination) has been cruel.
School boards can be voted out. Teachers, once tenured, the worst that happens is they spend their years in the rubber room writing the next great American navel gazing novel.
At least they don't call themselves "California Education Assocation".
I believe you are right. Too many “educators” get elected to school boards because voters think they know best. Educators, former teachers, are probably the worst choices.
Not only that, but nonunion teachers come from the same “teacher” schools as union teachers. They’ve had the same leftist bilge ground into them.
